Otters Complete Sweep Of Golden Eagles

12–1 win over CSULA caps second series sweep of the season

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay finished a series sweep of Cal State L.A. in impressive fashion with a 12–1 win over the Golden Eagles Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The win lifted CSUMB's record to 27–10 overall and 22–6 in the CCAA. It leaves the Otters 1 1/2 games ahead of second place Chico State (20–7) and four games up on Cal State Dominguez Hills (16–8) with 12 games remaining.

Otter bats pounded 17 hits just one day after matching their season high of 18. Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) had four hits, Jacob Martin (Bloomington/Chaffey College) added three hits and five RBI and Nathan Flores (Orange Lutheran HS/Santa Ana College) hit his third home run of the season to pace the offense.

Senior Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS) was stellar in his second start, allowing just a single unearned run on six hits over seven innings. He also fanned five without a walk to improve to 3–1 on the season.

Martin got the Otters started early with an RBI single in the first to plate Miguel with the first of his three runs. Martin added 2–run doubles in the third and fourth innings as CSUMB put the game on ice early.

Colby Harrison (Chico/Pleasant Valley HS) closed the game by striking out two and allowing one hit over the final two frames.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Chase Lindemann's sac fly put the cap on a 5–run fifth inning that gave the Otters a 9–1 lead.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The Otters completed their second series sweep of the season with Sunday's 12–1 win over Cal State L.A. CSUMB swept Stanislaus State Mar. 25–27.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, GOLDEN EAGLE EDITION… The Otters swept a season series from Cal State L.A. for just the second time. The only other time they turned the trick came in 2019. CSUMB now has won nine consecutive home games against the Golden Eagles dating back to the 2018 season.

ANOTHER SERIES WIN… By taking the first three games from Cal State L.A., the Otters secured their sixth CCAA series win in seven attempts this season (they split at San Francisco State). The last team to take a season series from CSUMB was Cal State L.A., which took 3-of-4 at Reeder Field Feb. 14–16, 2020.

RECORD–BREAKING SERIES… The Otters scored 49 runs in the 4–game sweep of Cal State L.A. That breaks to school record for runs in a series of 48 set against Cal Poly Pomona Apr. 27–28, 2007.

MIGUEL IS A HITTING MACHINE… Brady Miguel finished the sweep of Cal State L.A. with video game–like numbers. He went 14–for–21 (.667) with four doubles, 12 runs scored, three RBI and a pair of stolen bases.

MIGUEL'S HITTING STREAK… Brady Miguel extended his hitting streak to nine games by going 4–for–5 Sunday versus Cal State L.A. Over the streak — which dates back to Apr. 1 — he his hitting .583 (21–for–36) with four doubles, a home run, 17 runs and 11 RBI.

DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters scored double–digit runs for the 11th time in 37 games this season when they hung 12 on Cal State L.A. Sunday afternoon. That mark already ties the 2017 team for No. 4 in the Otter record book. The CSUMB record for double–digit runs in a season is 19 by the 2018 squad.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Jacob Martin 2 (8), Adrian Collazo (3). TRIPLES: Nathan Flores (1). HOME RUNS: Nathan Flores 3.

THE LAST WORD… I'm really proud of our team this weekend. We showed a lot of fight and determination throughout the series. After a long day on Saturday where we had to comeback multiple times, we were able to play a solid Sunday game. We have a another challenging series this week when we travel to Dominguez Hills. They are a really good team and they have proven to be even better at home. It will take our best to beat them. – CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head south for the final time in the regular season to meet Cal State Dominguez Hills for a huge 4–game series in Carson. The action begins with a single game Thursday (Apr. 14) at 3 p.m. Note that this series will be played Thursday–Saturday due to the Easter holiday.
