Otters Ground Golden Eagles In Series Opener

Otters score early and often; Ethan McRae enjoys strong start

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior hurler Ethan McRae (Hanford HS/Fresno CC) returned to form, the offense continued to produce and the defense played error-free ball to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a 12–1 win over Cal State L.A. in the series opener Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

McRae (5–1) took his first loss of the season in his last start last week at Cal State San Marcos. He bounced back quickly by scattering five hits over seven strong innings to keep CSUMB (24–10, 19–6) in control throughout Friday's win. He ended up striking out six against no walks, with the only run he yielded coming via a balk in the fifth inning.

The Otter offense scratched out a run in the first inning thanks to a Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) hit batter, stolen base and a Golden Eagle error. Aaron Halpert's (Diamond Bar/Cypress HS) bloop double plated two runs in a 4–run Otter second and L.A. never sniffed the lead over the final seven innings.

Sophomore second baseman Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) led the 14–hit Otter attack with three hits, including his first triple of the season. Junior center fielder Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) added three hits while Miguel had two hits and scored a career–high four runs.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Nico Hartojo's RBI triple pushed the Otter lead to 8–0 after four innings.

DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters scored double–digit runs for the ninth time in 34 games this season when they hung 12 on Cal State L.A. Friday night. That mark already ties the 2007 squad for No. 6 in the Otter record book. The CSUMB record for double–digit runs in a season is 19 by the 2018 squad.

EVEN STEVEN… Friday's 12–1 win over Cal State L.A. evened CSUMB's home record versus the Golden Eagles at 14–14. L.A. still owns a 36–26 lead in the all–time series with CSUMB, the best record of an Otter opponent amongst active NCAA Division II programs.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Aaron Halpert (1), Brady Miguel (9), Chris Rubottom (4). TRIPLES: Nico Hartojo (1). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series against the Golden Eagles with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
