Standley Stands Up In First Collegiate Start

Senior Joseph Standley tosses six inning of 1-hit ball in 5-1 win at San Marcos

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 21 Cal state Monterey Bay completed another series win thanks to a spectacular first collegiate start from senior Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS), who threw six innings of 1–hit ball to lead the Otters to a 9–0 victory at Cal State San Marcos Sunday afternoon.

Standley (2–1) had to be on top of his game as his counterpart, Cougar freshman Nolan Long, no-hit CSUMB through five innings. But the Otters broke through in the sixth with their first two hits and two runs to make Standley's efforts pay dividends.

Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) led off the seventh with his third home run of the season to pour gas on the fire. Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) doubled and Adrian Collazo (Ramona HS/Palomar College) tripled as CSUMB scored in each of the final four frames to turn the pitcher's duel into a laugher.

Chris Tonna (Fremont/Kennedy HS) and Nathan Flores (Orange Lutheran HS/Santa Ana College) added three innings of 1–hit, shutout relief to secure the win.

The victory lifted CSUMB's record to 23–10 overall and 18–6 in CCAA play. The Otters remain within one-half game of Chico State in the always competitive CCAA race with 12 games remaining.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Nico Hartojo homered to lead off the seventh inning. San Marcos never got the potential tying run as far as the on deck circle from that moment on.

A SERIES OF FORTUNATE EVENTS… The Otters now have won (5) or tied (1) all six of their CCAA series so far in 2020. They have won (7) or tied (2) nine consecutive CCAA series dating back to the 2020 season.

TAMING THE COUGARS… With this weekend's 3–1 series victory over Cal State San Marcos, the Otters have now won (4) or tied (1) all five series in which they've met the Cougars. CSUMB holds a 14–4 all–time series advantage over San Marcos.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Kyle Guerra (4). TRIPLES: Adrian Collazo (1). HOME RUNS: Nico Hartojo (3).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex to host Cal State L.A. for a 4–game series Apr. 8–10. The action begins with a single game Apr. 8 at 6 p.m.
