Otters, Coyotes Trade Routs In Doubleheader Split

CSUMB drops Game 1, 17-6, wins Game 2 14-2

SEASIDE, Calif. — Whoever coined the phrase "baseball is a funny game" didn't know the half of it as evidenced by Saturday's doubleheader between Cal State San Bernardino and No. 17 Cal State Monterey Bay. The teams traded routs with the Coyotes taking the opener 17–6 and the Otters winning the nightcap 14–2.

San Bernardino hit four home runs and drew eight walks to score its 17 runs in Game 1 with just 12 hits. The Otters flipped the script in Game 2, however, scoring 14 times on 11 hits with the help of nine free passes.

The split leaves CSUMB at 32–11 overall and 27–8 in the CCAA. San Bernardino stays alive in the CCAA Tournament race at 22–19 overall and 18–13 in league play.

Jake Borst hit a pair of homers in the opener and drove in five runs to lead the Coyote offense. The Otters kept things close through the first half of the game, but San Bernardino pulled away by scoring 11 runs over the final four innings.

Game 2 held even less drama then the opener as the Otters exploded for nine runs in the first inning to put it on ice early. Brady Miguel's (San Benito HS) grand slam capped the outburst.

Senior southpaw Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS) made sure those runs would stand up by tossing a complete game 3–hitter. He struck out seven and walked two to improve to 5–1 on the season.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Kyle Csakan's 2–run double capped a 4–run seventh that put the Coyotes on top, 13–4.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Brady Miguel's grand slam put the finishing touches on a 9–run Otter first.

DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters scored double–digit runs for the 14th time in 44 games this season when they hung 14 on Cal State Cal State San Bernardino in Game 2 Saturday night. That mark is all alone in second place in the Otter record book. The CSUMB record for double–digit runs in a season is 19 by the 2018 squad.

THE BEAT GOES ON… Brady Miguel and Chase Lindemann saw their streaks of reaching base safely extend to 26 and 25 games respectively with each player collecting hits in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader. Lindemann also ran his current hitting streak to 10 games.

MIGUEL IS A HIT… Brady Miguel moved up to No. 5 on the Otter single–season hit list with three knocks Saturday against Cal State San Bernardino. He now has 72 hits this season, tying him with Kyle Dean (2019) for No. 5. Next up are Brian Morley and Kokko Figueiredo, who each collected 73 hits in 2018. TJ Dove owns the top two spots on the list with 90 hits in 2018 and 79 hits in 2019.

A GRAND OLD TIME… Brady Miguel's first inning grand slam in Saturday's nightcap was the school–record sixth slam by an Otter already in 2022. Prior to this season, the Otters had never hit more than two slams in a season..

EXTRA BASES, GAME 1… DOUBLES: Kyle Guerra (7). Nico Hartojo (6), PJ Kissee (2). TRIPLES: Brady Miguel (6). HOME RUNS: Arthur Soto (2).

EXTRA BASES, GAME 2… DOUBLES: Jason Ajamian (5), Jacob Martin (11). TRIPLES: Nico Nico Hartojo (2). HOME RUNS: Brady Miguel (3).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Coyotes will conclude their 4–game series with a single game Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
