Otters Celebrate Senior Day With Win Over San Bernardino

CSUMB clinches its 8th series win of 2022 with a 3-2 victory over Coyotes

SEASIDE, Calif. — After the first three games of the series resembled a video game, Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Bernardino saved their best for last to celebrate CSUMB's senior day Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. In a game that was both well played and well pitched by both teams, the Otters overcame a 2–0 deficit to earn a 3–2 win.

The victory gave the Otters another series win in CCAA play as they improved to 33–12 overall and 28–8 in conference action. San Bernardino dipped to 22–20 and 18–14.

Jake Borst hit a solo shot in the first and AJ Barraza came around to score on a wild pitch in the third to stake the Coyotes to an early lead. But a Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) run-scoring single and a laser beam double off the fence in right center by Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) tied the game in the Otter half of the third.

The game turned on two huge defensive plays — one that was made and one that wasn't — in the seventh. Freshman Arthur Soto (Archbishop Mitty HS) made the big play for the Otters.

After Riley Parker had reached third with no outs. Parker Fokken Menifee/Chaffey College) fanned Barraza then coaxed Derek Bogh to hit a 1–hopper to third. Soto snagged the ball, reached back to catch Parker off the base, then fired across to Ajamian for the inning–ending double play.

The play that wasn't made came with one out in the home half of the seventh. Coyote right fielder Giovanni Del Negro made an all-or-nothing dive for Chase Lindemann's Saugus HS/Hartnell College) sinking liner. He just missed and the ball skipped by him, allowing Lindemann to motor to third with a triple.

Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) then singled through the drawn-in infield to plate Lindemann with what proved to be the winning run.

Fokken struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to improve to 5–2 on the season. Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) tossed a perfect eighth and ninth to earn his fourth save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Chris Tonna got CCAA home run leader Kyle Csakan to ground to short for the final out.

THE MAGIC NUMBER IS THREE… The race for the CCAA title is down to three teams as only Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona still have a chance to catch the Otters. The magic number against Chico State — next week's opponent — is three. That is, any combination of Otter wins and Chico State losses totaling three would eliminate the Wildcats. Against Cal Poly Pomona, the magic number is two.

ANOTHER SERIES WIN… The Otters earned their eighth CCAA series win in nine attempts this season by taking 3-of-4 from Cal State San Bernardino. The only series the Otters didn't win was a split at San Francisco State in March.

THE BEAT GOES ON… Brady Miguel and Chase Lindemann saw their streaks of reaching base safely extend to 27 and 26 games respectively with each player collecting hits in Sunday's 3–2 win over Cal State San Bernardino. Lindemann also ran his current hitting streak to 11 games.

MIGUEL IS A HIT… Brady Miguel moved up to No. 3 on the Otter single–season hit list with two knocks Sunday against Cal State San Bernardino. He now has 74 hits this season, passing Brian Morley and Kokko Figueiredo, who each collected 73 hits in 2018. TJ Dove owns the top two spots on the list with 90 hits in 2018 and 79 hits in 2019.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Jacob Martin (12). TRIPLES: Chase Lindemann (2). HOME RUNS: None.

THE LAST WORD… "San Bernardino is a really good, physical ball club and we will likely see them again down the road. It took a total team effort today to take the series. Today was a really good college baseball game. Both sides pitched well and there were great defensive plays from both teams. We were able to execute with the game on the line which led to the series clinching win. Now, we get the opportunity to head to Chico and play another solid ball club. Next week's series will be every bit the challenge and we are looking forward to competing." – Cal State Monterey Bay Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their regular season with a trip to Chico for a 4–game set against the Wildcats Apr. 29–May 1.
