Otter Bats, McRae’s Arm Lead To Series Opening Win

Ethan McRae goes seven strong as Otters beat Coyotes, 10–3

SEASIDE, Calif. — Jason Ajamian's (Pasadena/CSUN) bases–clearing triple in the first inning set the tone and Ethan McRae's (Hanford HS/Fresno CC) arm silenced the Coyote bats as No. 17 Cal State Monterey Bay rolled to a 10–3, series–opening win over Cal State San Bernardino Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB improved to 31–11 overall and 26–7 in CCAA play, moving three games ahead of Chico State with seven games remaining in the regular season. San Bernardino, which is in a dogfight for one of six CCAA Tournament bids, fell to 21–18 and 17–12.

The Otters jumped on top with a 4–run first inning, highlighted by a laser beam triple off the wall in straight-away center field off the bat of Ajamian to clear the bases. A Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) RBI triple in the fourth inning extended the Otter lead to 6–1. Chase Lindemann's (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) run–scoring double in the eighth helped drive the final nail in the coffin.

All of that support was more than enough for McRae, who fanned eight and allowed just one run in seven innings to improve to 6–1 on the season. Christian McInerney (Benicia/Sacramento City College) pitched a perfect eighth and infielder Dominic Giuntoli (Castro Valley/Chabot College) came in to get the final out in his first collegiate pitching appearance.

Lindemann and Miguel led the 11–hit Otter attack with three hits apiece. Miguel and Ajamian each drove in three runs.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Ethan McRae caught Brandon Galindo looking for the final out of the seventh with the Otters leading 7–1.

DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters scored double–digit runs for the 13th time in 42 games this season when they hung 10 on Cal State Cal State San Bernardino Friday night. That mark is now all alone in second place in the Otter record book. The CSUMB record for double–digit runs in a season is 19 by the 2018 squad.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… Jacob Martin saw his 11–game hitting streak end Friday night when he went 0–for–4.

WELL, MAYBE NOT ALL GOOD THINGS… Chase Lindemann and Brady Miguel saw their streaks of reaching base safely extend to 24 and 23 games respectively with each player collecting three hits Friday night. They are the two longest streaks of the season by any Otter..

MIGUEL IS A HIT… Brady Miguel moved into the top 10 on the Otter single–season hit list with three knocks Friday against Cal State San Bernardino. He now has 69 hits this season, tying him with Matt DeJesus (2009) and Mark Hurley (2013) for No. 9 on the list. Next up are Hayden Duer and Jacob Tonascia who each collected 70 hits in 2018. TJ Dove owns the top two spots on the list with 90 hits in 2018 and 79 hits in 2019.

McRAE IS NOW TOP 10 IN WINS… By improving to 6–1 with Friday's win over Cal State San Bernardino, Ethan McRae moved into a tie for sixth place on the Otter single–season wins list. He is one of seven Otter pitchers with six wins. The last to do it were Jeffrey Ahern (7–0) and Greg Steinbeck (6–1) in 2019. The Otter record for wins in a season is 12 by Jeff Owen (12–1) in 2013.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Chase Lindemann (9). TRIPLES: Jason Ajamian (1), Brady Miguel (5). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Coyotes will continue their 4–game series with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
