Mina Tsai at Johnny Mathis Invitational

Record-Breaking Day At Johnny Mathis Invitational

Five school records fall, 12 PRs set at Cox Stadium

April 18, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO — Four Otter student–athletes combined to break five school records, highlighting a successful weekend for the Cal State Monterey Bay track and field team at the Johnny Mathis Invitational at Cox Stadium.

Freshman Mina Tsai (San Jose/Santa Teresa HS) led the way by setting CSUMB standards in the long jump (16–7) and the 200 meters (25.82).  In the long jump, she broke her own school record of 16–6 set last month at the Occidental Invitational. In the 200, she broke the mark teammate Alexis White (San Gorgonio HS) (26.25) set in the season–opening Kim Duyst Invitational on Mar. 5.

Shed no tears for White, however, as she was busy breaking her own school record in the 100 by running a 12.24. It marks the third time she has set the CSUMB record in the event in the last six weeks.

Also setting a school record on the track was freshman Taylar Yost (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield HS), whose 1:07.84 in the 400 hurdles broke Jessica Bettencourt's time of 1:08.38 set at Cox Stadium back in 2018. She becomes the first Otter ever to qualify for the CCAA Championship meet in the event.

On the field, sophomore Nia Howard (San Gorgonio HS) broke her own record javelin by throwing 129–11. She set the previous record of 123–5 while earning All–CCAA honors at the conference championship meet in 2019. Howard became the first Otter to win an event at a meet this season.

All five of the record–breaking performances were CCAA qualifying marks and four were personal records. Only Tsai's 200 run was not. Natalie Harper (Cosumnes Oaks HS) (1,500), and Brooke Roy (Camus [Wash.] HS) and Mackenzie Caprino (Steeplechase) also posted CCAA qualifying marks over the weekend.

In total, Otter athletes posted 12 PRs.

"Friday and Saturday were meet days coaches always hope for," said CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "Excellent marks across the board. I ask my student–athletes to always do their best and they're doing just that. There is more to come and we're excited for it to get here."

The Otters head to Chico for their final chance to add CCAA Championship qualifiers Apr. 22–23 at the Chico State Distance Carnival and Twilight Invitational.
