Otter Bats Continue To Thump In 11–1 Win Over Toros

Jacob Martin hits his third homer of the series to highlight the 17-hit Otter attack

CARSON, Calif. — The Otter bats that came alive late in Friday's doubleheader split at Cal State Dominguez Hills continued to thump on Saturday as No. 17 Cal State Monterey Bay slugged its way to an 11–1 win at Toro Field.

The win gave CSUMB another series win and lifted its record to 30–11 overall and 25–7 in CCAA play. Combined with losses by fellow contenders Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona Saturday, the Otters increased their lead in the CCAA race to 2 1/2 games over Chico and 5 1/2 games over Pomona with eight games remaining.

Dominguez Hills (22–16, 17–11) fell into a fourth place tie with Cal State San Bernardino, CSUMB's next opponent.

The Otters scored all of the runs they would need in the first inning when a Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) RBI double and a Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) run–scoring single led to a quick 3–0 lead. Brady Miguel's (San Benito HS) 2–run single capped a 3–run fifth that put the Otter up 8–1 and the game was basically in the bag.

Martin added his third home run of the series in a 3–run eighth inning to put a bow on the 17–hit Otter attack.

Senior Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS) allowed just one earned run in six innings to win his third consecutive start and improve to 4–1. Colby Harrison (Chico/Pleasant Valley HS) and Augusto Pineda (San Leandro HS/Chabot College) combined for three innings of 1–hit relief to seal the victory.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Brady Miguel's 2–run single capped a 3–run fifth that put the Otter up 8–1.

DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters scored double–digit runs for the 12th time in 41 games this season when they hung 11 on Cal State Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon. That mark ties the 2015 and 2016 teams for No. 2 in the Otter record book. The CSUMB record for double–digit runs in a season is 19 by the 2018 squad.

MARTIN IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT… Jacob Martin drove in three more runs in Saturday's victory to finish the series with 12 RBI. He now leads the CCAA with 52 RBI.

MARTIN MOVES UP THE RBI LIST… With 52 RBI on the season, Jacob Martin moved past Kevin Davidson (2015 and 2016) for the No. 4 spot on the Otter single season RBI list. Next up is Brian Morley, who drove home 57 runs in 2019. Jacob Tonascia set the Otter record with 65 RBI in 2018.

MIGUEL IS A HIT… Brady Miguel went 3–for–5 Saturday to take over the CCAA lead in hits with 66. He also leads the CCAA with a .526 on-base percentage.

MIGUEL ON THE HIT LIST… With three more hits Saturday, Brady Miguel moved up to No. 13 on the Otter single season hits list with 66. He ties Kevin Davidson (2016) and Ronnie Fhurong (2013). Next up are Brian Haggett (2013) and Daniel Gomez (2006) with 67 hits. TJ Dove owns the top two spots on the list with 90 hits in 2018 and 79 hits in 2019.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Jacob Martin (10), Nathan Flores (7). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Jacob Martin (5).

THE LAST WORD… "Dominguez Hills is a talented team with a potent offense. Taking 3 of 4 on the road against a good team took a total team effort. I'm proud of the way we played and proud of the way this team stays together regardless of the situation. Next week against San Bernardino will be another big test for our ball club." – CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home for the final time in the 2022 regular season when they host Cal State San Bernardino in a critical 4–game series Apr. 22–24. The action begins with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m.
