GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Led by an ace from freshman Harley Richardson (Santa Barbara/California Connections Academy), the Cal State Monterey Bay women's golf team shot a school record 1-under 287 to grab a 10 stroke lead at the RJGA Palm Valley Classic Friday at Palm Valley Golf Club.

CSUMB's 287 marked the first time in program history that the Otters came in under par as a team. CSUMB's previous low was a 288 at the 2011 Dennis Rose Invitational, though that came on a par-70 layout.

The record round gave the Otters a 10-stroke lead over Cal State East Bay and Cal State L.A. at the midway point of the tournament. Northeastern State and Colorado Christian complete the top five teams at 10-over.

Richardson's hole-in-one came on the 160-yard par 3 fourth hole. She finished the day at 2-over 74, her low round as a collegiate player.

Although Richardson's ace created the sizzle, sophomore Isabel Carpenter (San Luis Obispo HS) provided the main course. Her career record-low tying 4-under 68 earned her a share of first place. Fellow sophomore Zoe Offield (Stockton/Tokay HS) carded an even par 72 for a share of seventh place. Freshman Tilda Kvarnrud (Mariestad, Sweden) is tied for 13th at 1-over.

"Today was a step in the right direction," says CSUMB Head Coach Jim Ragan. "As a team, we played well making 20 birdies plus Harley's hole-in-one. Isabel is tied for the lead, Zoe kept her good playing going and Tilda really did a good job managing her round today. Harley had her first hole in one which is always fun. We are looking forward to tomorrow and having the opportunity to compete for a win."

The RJGA Palm Valley Classic concludes with 18 holes Saturday. Follow live stats online at the link above.
