Rubottom’s Slam Leads Otters To Series–Opening Win at Sonoma

Chris Rubottom goes deep twice, Ethan McRae throws six scoreless in 9–2 win

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Chris Rubottom (Long Beach CC) hit his first collegiate grand slam and drove in a career–high six runs to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a 9–2 win over Sonoma State in the opener of a 4–game series Friday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.

Rubottom also hit a 2–run jack in the second inning, providing more than enough support for senior southpaw Ethan McRae (Hanford/Fresno CC), who scattered seven hits over six scoreless innings to improve to 2–0. McRae fanned four and walked just one while lowering his ERA to 0.90.

CSUMB (9–5, 4–1 CCAA) jumped on top in the first inning when Jacob Martin (Livermore/MPC) cashed in a pair of Sonoma errors with a 2–run, 2–out double. The Otters doubled their lead in the second on Rubottom's first Otter home run.

A Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) single drove home Rubottom in the fourth inning before Rubottom capped the Otter scoreline with his slam in the fifth.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Chris Rubottom's grand slam — his second home run of the game — gave the Otters a 9–0 lead in the fifth inning.

GETTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT… Friday's win lifted CSUMB to 4–1 in CCAA play to open the 2022 conference campaign. It's CSUMB's best start in league play since the 2015 Otter began 9–0 en route to a third place finish.

EIGHT ISN'T ENOUGH … Chris Rubottom didn't set the Otter record for home runs in a game with two in Friday's win at Sonoma State (Hayden Duer did that with three against Stanislaus State in 2016), but he did become the eighth different player in Otter history to hit two in one game. The last Otter to accomplish the feat was Jacob Tonascia, who hit three in an NCAA West Regional game against Point Loma Nazarene on May 18, 2018.

A SIX PACK FOR RUBOTTOM… Chris Rubottom's six RBI in Friday's win at Sonoma State are tied for No. 3 on the Otter list for RBI in a single game. Kevin Davidson set the record with eight at Cal Poly Pomona on  Apr. 3, 2016. The last Otter to drive in as many as six in a game was Brian Morley, who plated six at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Mar. 30, 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Ethan McRae (W [2–0], 6.0 IP, 7H, 0R, 4K, BB); Chris Rubottom (3x5, 2HR [1,2], 3R, 6RBI); Jacob Martin (1x2, 2B, R, 2RBI); Brady Miguel (2x5, 2B, R, SB); Hunter Harris (1x3, 2B).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series at Sonoma State with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Seawolf Diamond.
