Miguel’s Big Game Leads Otters To Doubleheader Split

CSUMB beats Sonoma 18–7 in opener, falls 3–1 in nightcap

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay exploded for 18 runs in the opener but couldn't find the offense to support a strong outing by Ryan Platero (San Benito HS/MPC) in the nightcap as the Otters split a doubleheader at Sonoma State Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.

CSUMB took the opener 18–7 before falling 3–1 in Game 2. The Otters are now 10–6 overall and 5–2 in the CCAA.

Freshman Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) enjoyed a monster first game, going 4–for–5 with a double, his first home run of the season, six RBI and three steals. Designated hitter Jacob Martin (Bloomington/Chaffey College) added a pair of hits, including a 2–run triple, to pace the 18–hit Otter attack.

Sophomore lefty Christian McInerney (Sacramento CC) allowed just one run in three innings of relief to improve to 2–0.

Sonoma put up a four spot in the first inning of the opener, but it was all Otters after that. After posting single runs in the second and third, CSUMB exploded for eight in the fourth and then six more in the eighth to put the game on ice.

Platero made his second consecutive strong start in the nightcap, allowing just two earned runs while striking out seven in six innings. After Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) drove Miguel home with a single in the first inning, however, Otter bats went silent.

Sonoma managed just four hits, but scrapped together single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to earn the win.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Jacob Martin's 2–run triple capped an 8–run Otter fourth. Sonoma never got to within five runs of the lead again.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… representing the tying run, Brady Miguel flew out to end the game.

EIGHT ISN'T ENOUGH… to set the CSUMB record for runs in an inning. The 8–run fourth inning in Game 1 was a season high, but the Otter record in that category is 11 runs in a win at Cal State San Marcos on Mar. 29, 2018. In fact, Saturday marked the 14th time the Otters scored eight or more runs in an inning dating back to their inaugural season in 2006.

A THIEF IN THE DAY … Not only did Brady Miguel have an epic opening game at the plate with four hits, a double, a home run and six RBI, but he tied the Otter record for stolen bases in a game with three. He is the sixth Otter to accomplish the feat and the first since Kyle Dean swept three bags against Cal State San Marcos on Mar. 24, 2019.

A SIX PACK FOR RUBOTTOM MIGUEL… One day after Chris Rubottom drove in six RBI at Sonoma State, Brady Miguel matched his accomplishment. They both are tied for No. 3 on the Otter list for RBI in a single game. Kevin Davidson set the record with eight at Cal Poly Pomona on  Apr. 3, 2016.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series at Sonoma State with a Sunday game. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Seawolf Diamond.
