Otters Rally To Sweep Doubleheader From Stanislaus State

Jason Ajamian goes yard twice; Harrison, McInerney, Fokken are stellar in relief

SEASIDE, Calif. — After scoring 13 runs in the opener, No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay rallied from an early 3–run deficit to sweep visiting Stanislaus State 13–5, 5–4 Saturday evening at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (19–9, 14–5 CCAA) got a pair of home runs from Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) — one in each game — and a 2–run blast from Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) in the opener. But most of their runs were manufactured in a variety of small–ball ways as the Otters scored the 18 total runs on just 14 hits.

CSUMB grabbed an early lead in the opener with a 6–run third inning that required just four hits. Two of those hits were Lindemann's homer and an RBI single by Nathan Flores (Orange Lutheran HS/Santa Ana College), but three of the runs came home via a pair of Warrior errors.

The Otters put the game away with a 5–run fifth inning that included four consecutive bases-loaded walks drawn by Brady Miguel (San Benito HS), Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS), Ajamian and Jacob Martin (Bloomington/Chaffey College).

Colby Harrison (Pleasant Valley HS/Sacramento CC) and Christian McInerney (Benicia HS/Sacramento CC) combined to throw 5 1/3 innings of 2–hit, scoreless relief. Harrison earned his second win of the season.

The Otters fell behind 3–0 in the first two innings of the nightcap before scrapping their way back. A perfectly executed Hunter Harris (Newark Memorial HS/Chabot College) squeeze bunt and Ajamian's no-doubt blast to left center got CSUMB back to within 3–2.

The Otters tied the game on a wild pitch and a Lindemann sacrifice fly in the fourth inning before Lindemann's RBI single down the right field line in the sixth inning cashed in a leadoff error that got Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) to second base to start the inning.

Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/CHaffey College) tossed three perfect innings of relief to earn the win in Game 2.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jacob Martin drew the fourth bases-loaded walk of the fifth inning to extend the Otter lead to 12–5.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN…  Nico Hartojo scored on Chase Lindemann's sharp single down the right field line in the sixth inning. Parker Fokken pitched a perfect ninth to silence any thoughts of a Warrior comeback.

OTTERS WIN ANOTHER SERIES… The Otters clinched their fourth CCAA series win in five attempts this season with Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Stanislaus State. They'll go for their first series sweep in Sunday's series finale.

ON A ROLL… The Otters will look to extend their winning streak to four games Sunday against Stanislaus State, which would match their season high. CSUMB already has posted three 4–game winning streaks so far in 2022.

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Winkler (2). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Ajamian 2 (6,7), Lindemann (3).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series with Stanislaus State Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.

GO OTTERS!
