Otters Complete Sweep Of Stanislaus With 19–6 Victory

9–run second inning paves the way for most runs scored by CSUMB this season

SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team left nothing to chance in its quest to sweep Stanislaus State, scoring a season–high 19 runs in a 19–6 victory Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB (20–9, 15–5 CCAA) pulled to within one–half game of Chico State for first place in the CCAA with the win.

Freshman third baseman Arthur Soto (Archbishop Mitty HS) continued to be the story of the weekend by nearly becoming the second player in Otter history to hit for the cycle. He finished the day 4–for–5 with a triple and his first collegiate home run. That brought his totals for the weekend to 9–for–15 (.600) with five runs, three RBI and a pair of walks.

Designated hitter Jacob Martin (Bloomington/Chaffey College) also enjoyed a big day at the plate, going 3–for–3 with two doubles, four runs and six RBI.

Stanislaus took advantage of a 2–out error to score three unearned runs in the first inning, but it was all Otters after that. Martin got the ball rolling by doubling home two runs and scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game in the home half of the first.

The Otters put the game away in the following inning, parlaying four hits, four walks, a hit batter and an error into a season–high nine runs. Nathan Flores (Orange Lutheran HS/Santa Ana College) and Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) delivered the big blows with a double and triple respectively, each driving home two runs.

The large margin gave head Coach Walt White the chance to use his bullpen liberally, with five Otter pitchers seeing action. Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) earned his first win of 2022 allowing one run over 2 2/3 innings.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Chase Lindemann's 2–run triple capped a 9–run second inning, giving the Otters a commanding 12–3 lead.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The Otters earned their first series sweep of 2022 with Sunday's 19–6 win over Stanislaus State. It was CSUMB's first 4–game sweep of Stanislaus since the 2016 season.

ON A ROLL… The Otters extended their winning streak to four games Sunday against Stanislaus State, matching their season high. CSUMB owns four 4–game winning streaks so far in 2022.

LET MARTIN DO THE DRIVING… Jacob Martin drove in a career–high six runs in Sunday's 19–6 win over Stanislaus State. That mark ranks No. 3 in the Otter record book. Oddly, he is the third Otter to drive in six runs in a game this season. Chris Rubottom did it Mar. 4 at Sonoma State and Brady Miguel did it the very next day at Sonoma.

CROOKED NUMBER… The Otters put up crooked numbers in four innings of Sunday's 19–6 win over Stanislaus State. In fact, the Otters did it 10 times in their 30 innings over the series.

THE POINT IS NINE… CSUMB's 9–run second inning Sunday was its biggest of the season and sixth–biggest in program history. Their previous best this season was seven against Azusa Pacific on Feb. 19. The school record for runs in an inning is 11 set in an 18–7 win at Cal State San Marcos on Mar. 29, 2018.

19 IS NOT ENOUGH… While 19 runs are enough for CSUMB's season high, they're not enough to break the school record. CSUMB's season–high for runs was 18 in an 18–7 win at Sonoma State on Mar. 5. The all–time Otter record is 23 runs scored in a 23–6 win at Cal Poly Pomona on Apr. 3, 2016

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Adrian Collazo (1), Nathan Flores (5), Jacob Martin 2 (4). TRIPLES: Chase Lindemann (1), Arthur Soto (1). HOME RUNS: Arthur Soto (1).

THE LAST WORD… "This was a good series win against a solid Stan State ball club. We had a number of guys step up and play well. We utilized our entire roster and I think we played some good baseball. We haven't been perfect, but that's what we are striving for. But I do think we are getting better every week and we hope perfection comes as we move through the season. Next up is a challenging series at Cal State San Marcos." – CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Southern California to play a 4–game series at Cal State San Marcos Apr. 1–3.
