Otters Back To Winning Ways With 9–1 Win Over Stanislaus

Ethan McRae allows just one run in seven innings; freshman Arthur Soto gets first collegiate hit

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay kicked off its 4–game series against Stanislaus State in fine fashion with a convincing 9–1 win Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Senior Ethan McRae (Hanford HS/Fresno CC) had another impressive outing, allowing just one run while striking out seven in seven innings to improve to 4–0. Junior Augusto Pineda (San Leandro HS/Chabot College) threw two innings of 1–hit, shutout relief.

The Otters got all the offense they would need in the third inning when JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College) singled in a pair. They added two in the fourth and three in the fifth to put the game on ice early.

Freshman shortstop Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) led the 12–hit attack by going 3–for–5 with a pair of walks and two RBI. Freshman Arthur Soto (Archbishop Mitty HS) went 2–for–4 — including his first collegiate hit — with a pair of runs and an RBI in his first collegiate start.

Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) and Hunter Harris (Newark/Chabot College) also had two hits apiece. Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) claimed the game's only extra-base hit with a fifth-inning double.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jason Ajamian's sixth-inning single extended CSUMB's lead to 8–0.

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT… The Otters made it a perfect 5–for–5 this season in CCAA series openers with Friday night's 9–1 win over Stanislaus State. In fact, the last time the Otters didn't win a CCAA series open came back on Feb. 28, 2020 when (then) No. 20 Stanislaus State took a 9–0 decision in Turlock. For the record, the Otters swept the final three games to win that series.

MULTIPLE REASONS MIGUEL IS A STAR… Freshman Brady Miguel posted his team–leading 13th multi–hit game by going 3–for–5 in Friday's win over Stanislaus State. He tied Jason Ajamian and Chris Rubottom for the most 3–hit games this season with three.

HIS ERA WENT…UP? When you're dealing the way Ethan McRae has been dealing in 2022, any blemish makes your ERA rise. McRae allowed just one earned run in seven full innings Friday, but saw his ERA go up from 0.84 to 0.92. That still leads the CCAA by a healthy margin.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series against Stanislaus State with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
