Otters Add Three CCAA Qualifying Marks, School Record Performance At Hornet Invite

Roy, Caprino, Howard qualify for CCAA meet; Yost sets MB record in 400-hurdles

March 20, 2022

SACRAMENTO — Brooke Roy (Camus [Wash.] HS), Mackenzie Caprino (South Salem [Ore.] HS) and Nia Howard (San Gregornio HS) each recorded CCAA Championship qualifying marks to highlight the Cal State Monterey Bay day at the Hornet Invitational hosted by Sacramento State.

Roy and Caprino both hit their times in the steeplechase while Howard's mark came in the javelin. Caprino set a personal record in the process.

Roy ran a team season–best 11:26.95 to finish second overall in the steeple. Caprino's PR was 11:44.67. Both times were well under the 11:50.0 needed to qualify for the conference championship meet.

Howard's toss of 37.05 (121–6) was the second–best throw of her career as well as the second–best throw in Otter history. She went 123–5 while earning all–conference honors at the CCAA Championship in 2019.

In addition to the CCAA qualifying trio, the Otters also got team season–best performances from Taylar Yost, Alexis White and Natalie Harper. Yost led that trio by setting a school record and PR with a 1:10.87 in the 400-meter hurdles. White ran a 1:01.50 in the 400-meters, the No. 6 mark in Otter history. Harper went 4:52.76 in the 1,500.

Also recording PRs Saturday were Hannah Marin (1,500) and Sierra Shaver (steeple).

"We are moving along in the right direction," says CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "Hornet was a strong meet that gave the team the opportunity to work on getting marks needed to get into upcoming invites, and the team took full advantage of the opportunity. This team pushing up. Fanelli here we come."

The Otters will take next week as a training week to prepare for the Mike Fanelli Track Classic hosted by San Francisco State Mar. 31 through Apr. 2 at Cox Stadium.
