Otters Rise From The Dead, Beat S.F. State In 11 Innings

Otters score twice with two outs in ninth to force extras en route to 8–7 victory

SAN FRANCISCO — Down to its final out and with nothing going on offense, the No. 19 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team rose from death's doorstep to defeat San Francisco State 8–7 in 11 innings Friday evening at Maloney Field.

Trailing 7–5 with nobody on and two outs, the Otters got consecutive singles from Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) and Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) to stay alive. Senior first baseman Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) then delivered the clutch 2–out double to tie the game.
Senior lefty Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS) shut the door on the Gator offense, allowing time for Nathan Flores (Orange Luthern HS) to drive home the game–winner with a sac fly in the 11th.

Guerra's first inning sac fly staked the Otter to an early lead. Flores added an RBI double to highlight a 3–run Otter fourth. With starter Ethan McRae (Hanford HS/Fresno CC) allowing just one unearned run through six innings, CSUMB seemed to be in control.

But the Gators touched Otter relievers for three doubles in a 6–run seventh, turning the tables and putting Otter backs against the wall. In the end, however, it served only to set up a fantastic finish for CSUMB fans.

CSUMB improved to 15–7 overall and 10–3 in CCAA play. S.F. State fell to 8–13 and 3–10.
 

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Joseph Standley struck out a pair of Gators to end the game with the potential tying run on second.

WORKING OVERTIME… Friday's 11–inning victory at San Francisco State was the first extra–inning game for the Otters this season. It marked the first time the Otters have played bonus baseball since a 7–4 win over Cal State East Bay on Mar. 6, 2020. It was CSUMB's longest game since dropping a 1–0, 11–inning game to Cal Poly Pomona at the CCAA Championship Tournament on May 10, 2019.

McRAE CONTINUES TO LEAD THE CCAA… Ethan McRae did not allow an earned run Friday at San Francisco State for the third time in six starts this season. In the process, he lowered his ERA to a conference–leading 0.84.

DOUBLE DIGIT DOUBLE DIGITS… By collecting 13 hits in Friday's win at San Francisco State, the Otters reached double digits in the hit column for the 10th time this season. The 13 hits trail only the 18 hits they put up against Azusa Pacific (Feb. 19) and Sonoma State (Mar. 5) for the most hits in a game this season.
