Otters Explode Late To Defeat Gators Again

CSUMB scores seven unanswered runs in the final three innings for a 9–2 victory

SAN FRANCISCO — No.19 Cal State Monterey Bay scored seven unanswered runs over the final three innings to break a 2–2 tie en route to a 9–2 win at San Francisco State Saturday at Maloney Field.

Hunter Harris (Newark Memorial HS/Chabot College) snapped the deadlock with an RBI double in the seventh inning. He came around to score two batters later on a Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) single and that was all reliever Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) needed to secure his first victory of the season.

CSUMB received another strong start from freshman Michael Potter (Elk Grove/Sheldon HS), who allowed just one earned run and four hits in five full innings, lowering his ERA to 1.77. Fokken came on to add four innings of almost perfect relief, allowing no hits and walking one.

Miguel added an RBI double in the eighth inning and Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./Monarch HS/MPC) chipped in a 2–run double in the ninth.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… JJ Engman beat the throw home on a Nico Hartojo grounder to make it 5–2 Otters in the eighth inning. The Gators never got the tying run as far as the on deck circle after that.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… After extending his streak to 15 games with a pair of hits in Friday's series opener, Jacob Martin saw his hitting streak end when he drew a walk in the ninth inning to end the day 0–for–4. His was the third–longest streak in Otter history. Tommy George set the Otter record with an 18–game streak in 2012.

POTTER FOLLOWING IN McRAE'S FOOTSTEPS… Freshman Michael Potter finished Saturday's game with an ERA of 1.77. Amongst CCAA pitchers with at least 20 innings pitched, only Ethan McRae (0.84) owns a lower ERA.

DOUBLE DIGIT DOUBLE DIGITS, CONTINUED… By collecting 15 hits in Saturday's win at San Francisco State, the Otters reached double digits in the hit column for the 11th time this season and the third time in the last four games. The 15 hits trail only the 18 hits they put up against Azusa Pacific (Feb. 19) and Sonoma State (Mar. 5) for the most hits in a game this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Parker Fokken (W [1–2], 4.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 3K); Michael Potter (ND, 5.0IP, 4H, 2R, 3K); Brady Miguel (3x5, 2B, 3B, R, 3RBI); Nico Hartojo (3x5, 2 2B, 2R, 3RBI, SB).

EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Brady Miguel, Nico Hartojo (2), Hunter Harris. TRIPLES: Brady Miguel. HR: None

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series at San Francisco State with a doubleheader starting Sunday noon.
