ALAMEDA, Calif. —
Led by a sizzling 4–under 68 from Liam Allder (Sundsvall, Sweden) five freshmen combined to lead the Cal State Monterey Bay men's golf team to the title of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout on the Corica Park South course Tuesday afternoon.

CSUMB finished the 18–hole event at a tournament record 18–under 846, tied for the second lowest tournament score in the storied history of the Otter golf program. Only the 2013 squad, which posted an 845 to win the CCAA Championship Tournament, ever went lower.

Allder led the way by roaring back from three strokes down to start the day, forcing a playoff with Cal State East Bay's Ananjan Kaushik. Both golfers played the 54 holes at 9–under 207. Allder got there with rounds of 67, 72 and 68.

Allder parred the first playoff hole to claim medalist honors.

"This is huge for the team to win. We have so much talent, and to see it come together was awesome," says CSUMB Head Coach Jason Owen. "I couldn't be more proud of Liam for leading the Otters this week. Congrats to him on the individual title. All-around, it was a great week for us."

Allder wasn't the only member of CSUMB's freshman quintet to contribute to the victory as all five members contributed scoring rounds this week.  Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden), Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) and Ryan Parry (Sacramento/Jesuit HS) each carded even-par 72 Tuesday to complete CSUMB's final round scoring. Björken tied for eighth place at 211 (5–under), Deaner tied for 14th (213) and Parry tied for 28th (217).

The final member of the freshman quintet, Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) just missed a spot in the top half of the 95–player field, finishing 49th at 6–over.

The CCAA swept the top five spots in the team standings, with Cal State San Bernardino finishing six strokes behind the Otters at 12–under 852. Stanislaus State (854) Chico State and East Bay (both 857) rounded out the Top 5.

CSUMB will take the next week off before closing the regular season at the Hanny Invitational Mar. 28–29 at Turlock Country Club.
