Otters Settle For Series Win After Late Pomona Rally

Broncos score three in the ninth; Martin extends hitting streak to 14 games

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay had to settle for its third consecutive series win to open CCAA play when Cal Poly Pomona rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to pull out a 6–4 win Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (14–7, 9–3 CCAA) saw its 4–game winning streak snapped. Pomona improved to 9–11 and 4–7.

Pomona's rally answered and eighth–inning rally by the Otters that saw them score three times to overcome a 3–1 deficit. Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) had the big hit with a 2–out, 2–run single to tie the game at three. Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) then extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI single of his own to give CSUMB what proved to be a fleeting advantage.

Sophomore lefty Nick Bouillerce (Granada HS/MPC) had a rare tough outing, allowing seven hits and three runs over five innings. Junior Colby Harrison (Pleasant Valley HS/Sacramento CC) provided three strong innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit while striking out three.

Senior Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) missed a chance for his second save of the weekend and fell to 0–2.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Pomona reliever Scott Armstrong got Chase Lindemann, representing the tying run, to pop to second for the final out of the game.

A PAUSE TO THE HOT START… The Otters fell to 9–3 in CCAA play with Sunday's loss to Cal Poly Pomona. That matches the 2015 Otters as the only teams in program history to open CCAA play with nine wins in their first 12 conference games. The longest the Otters have gone before picking up their fourth conference loss was in 2015, when they started 15–3 en route to a 27–13 conference finish.

MARTIN STAYS HOT… With his ninth–inning RBI single Sunday, Jacob Martin extended his hitting streak to a team season–high 14 games. He tied Mark Hurley (2013) and Max Sanderson (2017) for the fourth–longest hitting streak in Otter history. Tommy George set the Otter record with an 18–game streak in 2012.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Colby Harrison (ND, 3.0IP, 1H, 3K); Chase Lindemann (3x5, R, RBI, SB); Kyle Guerra (1x3, 2B, R, SB); Jason Ajamian (1x4, 2RBI).

THE LAST WORD… "
Cal Poly Pomona is a really good club and this was a really competitive series. As much as we would have loved to finish it off this afternoon, we will take the series win and move on to a challenging road series next weekend at San Francisco." – CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for a 4–game set at San Francisco State Mar. 18–20. The series kicks off with a single game Friday (Mar. 18) at 3 p.m.
