Potter’s Arm, Otter Bats Lead To Sweep Of Broncos

Michael Potter wins first collegiate start; Jacob Martin and JJ Engman go yard

SEASIDE, Calif. — Another strong outing from Michael Potter (Elk Grove/Sheldon HS) and timely home runs from Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) and JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./O'Dea HS) led Cal State Monterey Bay to a doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Potter allowed just four hits and one earned run over 7 1/3 strong innings to win the opener, 3–2. Engman's first Otter home run and a 2–run triple by Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) helped the Otters overcome an early 3–run deficit to win the nightcap, 8–3.

A freshman lefty, Potter was brilliant in his first collegiate start. He allowed Pomona just one hit through the first seven innings before the Broncos strung together three singles in the eighth for their only earned run. Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS) got the last five outs — all via strikeout — to earn his first save.

The Otters gave Potter and Standley all the support they would need via a Miguel RBI knock in the fifth inning and a 2–run blast from Martin in the sixth.

Pomona touched Game 2 starter Ryan Platero (San Benito HS/MPC) for three runs in the first two innings. But the sophomore righty settled down and shut the door over his final 3 1/3 innings to give his offense time to answer.

The Otters got one back in the third on a sac fly before a Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) RBI double and Miguel's 2–run triple gave the Otters their first lead in the fourth. The Otters put the game away in the sixth when Miguel scored all the way from first on a Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) single in front of Engman's no–doubter to left.

Junior Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) slammed the door by fanning six in two innings of scoreless relief for his second save of 2022.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Joseph Standley caught Tyler Chaffee looking for the final out with the potential tying run at second base.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… JJ Engman's first Otter home run extended the CSUMB lead to 8–3 in the sixth inning of the 7–inning game.

STARTING HOT… The Otters improved to 9–2 in CCAA play with Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly Pomona, matching the 2015 Otters as the only teams in program history to open CCAA play with nine wins in their first 11 conference games.

MARTIN STAYS HOT… With a hit in each game Saturday — including his second homer of the season in the opener — Jacob Martin extended his hitting streak to a team season–high 13 games. He is hitting .439 (18–for–41) over that span.

BROOMS AT THE READY… The Otters will be looking to complete their first 4–game home sweep since taking four from Cal State East Bay Mar. 15–17, 2019.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series against Cal Poly Pomona Sunday with noon first pitch. Note that this is one hour different from the originally scheduled 11 a.m. start. The switch was made to account for Daylight Savings Time beginning Sunday morning.
