McRae Wins Battle Of Aces As Otters Take Opener From Pomona

Ethan McRae improves to 3–0; Jason Ajamian homers twice in 3–2 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Round 1 in a battle of CCAA heavyweights went to Cal State Monterey Bay when Otter southpaw Ethan McRae (Hanford HS/Fresno CC) out–dueled Cal Poly Pomona ace Will Rudy to lead CSUMB to a 3–2 victory Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters improved to 12–6 over and 7–2 in CCAA play. Pomona fell to 8–9 and 3–5.

McRae (3–0), scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run over six innings. Rudy (3–1) was nearly as sharp, allowing six hits over 5 2/3 innings.

The difference between the two pitchers was that McRae didn't have to face Otter first baseman Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN), who drove in all three Otter runs with a 2–run blast in the second inning and a solo shot in the sixth. They were his team–leading fourth and fifth home runs of the season.

Junior Kyle Galart (Woodland/Pioneer HS) followed McRae with two perfect innings of relief. Senior Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of 2022.

In addition to Ajamian, who finished the night 3–for–4, right fielder Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) recorded two hits, a double and a stolen base. Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) also doubled as part of the 9–hit Otter attack.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Parker Fokken got Bronco catcher Johnny Pappas swinging for the final out with the potential tying run at second base.
