Gasper, Alcayaga Sweep First CCAA Weekly Awards Of 2022

Otter duo helps team to 4–1 performances at Concordia Kickoff Classic

February 07, 2022

SEASIDE, Calif. — Junior pitcher Cassie Gasper (Merced/El Capitan HS) and freshman catcher Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) enjoyed big weekends at the Concordia Kickoff Classic to sweep the first CCAA Pitcher and Player of the Week awards for 2022.

Duo are the first Otter softball stars to sweep the CCAA weekly awards since Julia Garcia (player) and Hayley Fein (pitcher) did so the week of Apr. 23, 2017.

Gasper led an incredible effort by the Otter pitching staff, which yielded just two unearned runs in 32 2/3  innings. She went 2–1 with a 0.00 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 18 innings. Her loss came on a throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of what would have been a 3–hit shutout.

In three appearances, Gasper allowed six hits and three walks to post a 0.50 WHIP, and opponents hit just .098 against her. She began her junior season with a 2-hit shutout of Azusa Pacific Friday night. She also picked up the win against Montana State Billings Saturday afternoon.

Alcayaga burst into her collegiate softball career by hitting .615 on the weekend to earn her first CCAA Player of the Week award. The Sonoma native (Sonoma Valley HS) went 8-for-13 and collected hits in all five games. She had three doubles, six RBI, four runs scored, and registered a 1.434 OPS.

Against Montana State Billings, Alcayaga posted a weekend-best three hits while also catching all seven innings in the Otters' 10-1 win. She started all five games for Cal State Monterey Bay, including the final four behind the plate, helping Otter pitchers post shutouts in two of those games. After the first weekend of play, Alcayaga leads the CCAA in batting average (.615).

"As evidenced by their spectacular performances, Cassie, Ally and the MB softball team worked very hard the COVID off year," says CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney. "Cassie pitches beautifully and Ally  played like a veteran."

CSUMB went 4-1 at the Concordia Kickoff Classic. The Otters lead the CCAA in ERA (0.00) and batting average against (.121).

Next up for the Otters is a return to Southern California for a doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 12) against the 2021 NCAA national runners-up, Biola University. CSUMB will play its home opener Feb. 18 when CCAA preseason favorite Chico State visits to begin a 4–game series.
