Key Errors Costly As Otters Fall Twice at Humboldt

Otters allowed five unearned runs in 4-1, 7-6 setbacks

ARCATA, Calif. — A handful of key fielding errors proved costly as Cal State Monterey Bay dropped a doubleheader at Cal Poly Humboldt, 4–1 and 7–6, Friday at Humboldt Field.

CSUMB (22–15, 7–11 CCAA) made five errors—two in Game 1 and three in Game 2—leading to five unearned runs that ultimately proved the deciding factors in both games.

Ellie Escalante's (Soquel HS) fourth homer of the season staked CSUMB to a 1–0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener. But two Otter miscues opened the door on a 4-run Humboldt sixth inning that pinned a hard-luck loss on freshman Jordan Knutson (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS).

Home runs in the second inning by Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) and Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) helped the Otters race to a 6–0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap. But two more Otters errors allowed the Lumberjacks to score their first two runs in the fourth inning, allowing the Jacks to tie the game with a 4-run fifth.

A pair of Humboldt relievers shut down the Otter offense over the final five innings before Bella Garcia's 2-out, infield single allowed the Jacks to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh.
