Otters, Jacks Split One-Run Games

CSUMB wins 3-2, falls 10-9 in Arcata

ARCATA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay wrapped up its 4-game series at Cal Poly Humboldt by splitting a pair of 1-run decisions, winning 3–2 and falling 10–9, Saturday at the Humboldt Softball Field.

Sophomore righty Kadence Nulick (Madera/Nuchanan HS) did a job in the opener, tossing a 5-hitter for her seventh victory and fifth complete game of the season. It was her 14th career win, tying her with Savannah Madrigal and Bianca Noriega for No. 13 on the CSUMB career wins list.

The Otter offense pounded out nine hits in Game 1, but twice left the bases loaded. They came from behind in the sixth on the strength of RBI singles by Andrea DeJesus (Live Oak HS/West Valley College) and Catherine Calzada (Lakewood HS/Sacred Heart Univ.).

Nulick tossed a perfect sixth and then worked around a leadoff single in the seventh to secure the victory.

CSUMB seemed well on its way to a sweep when it jumped to a 3–0 lead in the first inning of Game 2. A 3-run home run by Humboldt's Marissa Brody tied the game in the home half of the inning, but Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) answered with a 3-run bomb of her own to restore the Otters' 3-run lead.

RBI knocks from Nani Arreola (Oaks Christian HS) and Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School for Girls) got CSUMB's lead to 8–3 before the wheels fell off the wagon in the fourth inning. Humboldt collected three doubles and a home run in a 7-run fourth inning that gave the Jacks a 10–8 lead.

CSUMB pulled one run back in the fifth, but stranded the potential tying runs on second in the sixth inning and on third in the seventh.
