Otters Sweep Jessup To Close Nonconference Slate

CSUMB wins 8-0 (6 inn.) and 9-3

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Otter softball bats exploded for 17 runs and 22 hits to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to an 8–0 (6 inn.), 9–3 sweep of PacWest Conference rival Jessup University Tuesday at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB improved 25–16 with the wins. Jessup dipped to 20–17.

Junior Nani Arreola (Oaks Christian HS) went-4-for-4 with a home run to lead the way in Game 1. Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS) and Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School for Girls) both homered in the nightcap.

The Otter offense came to play from the get-go Tuesday, plating five runs in the first three innings of the opener. Arreola's RBI single got things started in the first. Sophomore catcher Catherine Calzada (Lakewood HS/Sacred Heart Univ.) added a pair of RBI singles. CSUMB also scored twice on wild pitches, including pinch runner Jaedyn White (Fairfield/Rodriguez HS) coming home with the walk-off run on one in the sixth.

The generous run support was more than enough for sophomore Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS), who threw five innings of 3-hit ball for her eighth win of the season.

Sophomore Mikaya Griego (Diamond Bar HS) pitched the final inning of Game 1 before starting the nightcap. She ended the afternoon throwing six innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out five. For her efforts in the nightcap, she picked up her third win of 2026.

As they did in the opener, the Otters raced to an early lead. Jackie Perales (Anaheim/Sunny Hills HS) hit a 2-run double to kick things off in the first inning. Martinez and Soriano hit their bombs in the third inning to make the lead 6–2 and the game was, for all intents and purposes, in the proverbial bag.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Catherine Calzada's RBI knock made it 5–0 Otters in the third inning. Jessup never got the tying run to the on-deck circle for the remainder of the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Nani Arreola made it 8–2 with a run-scoring single in the fourth. Again, Jessup never sniffed the lead from that point onward.

TOP 25 OTTERS: The Otters reached the 25-win plateau with Tuesday's sweep of Jessup University. It marks the 15th time in 19 full seasons of Otter softball that CSUMB has reached 25 wins.

YOU GOTTA HAVE FAITH: Faith Soriano hit her first collegiate out-of-the-park home run in Tuesday's Game 2 victory of Jessup University. Her only previous collegiate home run was a memorable one as well. It was an inside-the-park job that walked off Chico State in a 1–0 Otter win in 2024.

MARTINEZ UP TO SIXTH ON HOME RUN CHART: Nevaeh Martinez hit her team-leading 11th home run of the season in Tuesday's Game 2 win over Jessup University. That ties her with All-American Jackie Serna (2012) for the No. 6 spot on the CSUMB single-season list. Nina Villanueva set the Otter record with 16 in 2012.

NULICK TIES WILLIS ON CAREER WINS LIST: Sophomore Kadence Nulick earned her 15th career victory in Tuesday's opener against Jessup University. That ties her with Mackenzie Willis for No. 12 on the Otter career wins list. With her next victory, she'll tie Kassidy Stetler and Celeste Villagrana for 10th place.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Jackie Perales (1). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Nani Arreola (4).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Abreanna Alba (8), Jackie Perales (2). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Nevaeh Martinez (11), Faith Soriano (1).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will enjoy their CCAA bye weekend before heading to the Central Valley to begin a 4-game series at Stanislaus State in Turlock on Apr. 17. As always, if you can't make it to the games, you can catch all of the action on the FloSports Network (OtterAthletics.com/watch).
