SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay saw No. 2 Cal State San Marcos play a pair of nearly flawless games to earn a doubleheader sweep, 19–6 and 7–4, Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Technically speaking, the Cougars did make one fielding error in the nightcap, but they otherwise looked in postseason form. For their part, the potent Otter bats put up a San Marcos opponent season-high 10 runs in the doubleheader. Against many opponents, that would have been enough, but the Otters needed to be nearly perfect to win on this day given the way San Marcos played.

After falling behind 7–0 in the opener, a Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) grand slam got the Otters right back into it in the bottom of the second inning. But Otter pitchers walked seven batters in the top of the third inning and all seven of them came around to score in a 12-run frame that put the game on ice.

Nani Arreola (Oaks Christian HS) pulled two runs back with her second homer of the season in the bottom of the third. Sophomore pitcher Mikaya Griego (Diamond Bar HS) tossed scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, but by then the damage was done.

The Otters took advantage of the lone San Marcos error of the day to take a 1–0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. The Cougars scored two in the top of the third, but the Otters answered right back with an Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) RBI double in the home half.

Zoe Karam broke the tie an inning later with a 3-run homer as part of a 5-run San Marcos rally. The Otters responded with a Jaedyn White (Fairfield/Rodriguez HS) RBI single in the fourth and an RBI grounder from Arreola in the fifth, but that's as close as they would get.

Ganaden led the Otter offense with three hits and four RBI Friday. Arreola matched Ganaden's four RBI. Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) also hit safely in both games. Sophomore Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) highlighted the Otter pitching effort with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief in Game 2.

The Otters and Cougars will conclude their 4-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
