SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 20 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay dropped a pair of tough decisions to No. 4 Cal State East Bay, falling 5–4 and 3–1 Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The losses move CSUMB (22–9, 7–5 CCAA) into third place, while East Bay (24–4, 6–2) took sole possession of second place.

Each team managed just six hits in the opener. The Otters jumped on top in the first inning on Nevaeh Martinez's (Soquel HS) RBI double. But East Bay took advantage of an untimely Otter error to score two unearned runs in the second, and they proved to be the difference in the game.

A 2-run, pinch-hit double by Mariah Hopkins capped a 3-run Pioneer third that gave them a 5–1 lead. The Otters fought their way back into it in the home half of the inning when Abreanna Alba's (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) RBI single came on front of a Martinez moon shot over the scoreboard in left to make it a 5–4 ballgame.

Otter sophomore Kaitlyn Le (San Ramon/California HS) kept the Otters in the contest with five innings of 3-hit, shutout relief. But the Otters couldn't cash in their final base runners in the fourth and sixth innings before East Bay ace Marissa Quintero came in to shut the door over the final two innings to earn her first save.

The nightcap was an even better pitcher's duel, with Otter sophomore Kadence Nulick (Madera/Buchanan HS) and Quintero posting zeroes through six innings. East Bay finally broke through in the seventh, plating three runs on three hits and a costly Otter error.

CSUMB responded in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run on Andrea DeJesus's (West Valley College/Live Oak HS) RBI single. The Otters brought the potential winning run to the plate twice, but Quintero pitched out of the jam to escape with the win.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Marissa Quinetero pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to preserve the 1-run victory.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Marissa Quintero fanned Nani Arreola, representing the potential winning run, for the final out.

ALBA ON A STREAK… Abreanna Alba reached safely in both games Saturday to run her streak of reaching safely to 19 games. That's the longest streak by an Otter this season and the longest since Alyssa Burt reached safely in 23 straight during the 2019 season.

TRIPLE THE FUN… Ellie Escalante's triple in Game 1 was CSUMB's 17th of the season. That leads the league by seven. That also (already) ranks No. 3 in the Otter record book for triples in a season. The 2012 Otters hit 26 triples and the 2022 squad hit 23.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Nevaeh Martinez (7), Nani Arreola (5). TRIPLES: Ellie Escalante (3). HOME RUNS: Nevaeh Martinez (6).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will open a 4-game series with No. 2 ranked Cal State San Marcos Friday (Mar. 27) with a doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex, First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. If you can't make it to the games, you can catch all of the action on the FloSports Network (OtterAthletics.com/watch).
