Otters Earn Doubleheader, Series Sweeps With Walk–Off Win

CSUMB sweeps Saturday doubleheader from Biola University 10–2, 5–4

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay completed a doubleheader sweep of visiting Biola University in dramatic fashion when Jason Ajamian's (Pasadena/CSUN) 2–out, bases–loaded singled capped a 3–run rally in the final inning to give CSUMB a 5–4 win in game three of the weekend series Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB took the opener, 10–2. But Saturday's story was about the Otters (3–1 overall) finding a way to complete a series sweep against a strong West Region contender when their backs were against the wall.

Biola raced to a 4–0 lead in the third inning of the 7–inning finale. But, despite being limited to four hits in the game, the Otters clawed their way back. Freshman Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) got the rally started with an RBI triple in the third inning. They manufactured a run from whole cloth in the fifth when Arthur Soto (Archbishop Mitty HS), making his first collegiate appearance, was hit by a pitch, advance to second and third on a pair of wild pitches, then scored on a passed ball.

Nevertheless, CSUMB still had just two hits entering the final inning. Freshman PJ Kissee's (Gilroy/Live Oak HS) RBI double got one run back. A throwing error by third baseman Oscar Serratos allowed pinch runner Cooper Smith (Salinas/Cabrillo College) to score the tying run.

After the Eagles intentionally walked Miguel to load the bases, Ajamian drove a solid single to center to plate JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College) with the winning run.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Chris Rubottom's 2–run single capped a 4–run sixth inning that gave the Otters a 10–2 lead.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Jason Ajamian's RBI single brought home Cooper Smith to cap a 3–run rally for the walk-off win.

SERIES WIN… Saturday's doubleheader sweep captured CSUMB's second consecutive series sweep and third consecutive series victory dating back to Feb. 28, 2020.

OH WHAT A RELIEF IT IS… The CSUMB bullpen was nothing short of stellar Saturday afternoon. Five Otter relievers combined to throw nine innings of 3–hit, shutout relief.

RIDING THE K–TRAIN… Otter pitchers continued to collect strikeouts as if they were going out of style. Led by reliever Nick Bouillerce with four, they fanned 10 Eagles in the 9–inning first game. Augusto Pineda, Joseph Standley and Kyle Galart each fanned three for nine total in the 7–inning nightcap.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Brady Miguel (2x6, 3B, 2 RBI); Jason Ajamian (2x6, R, 2 RBI); Chris Rubottom (3x6 R, 2 RBI); Nick Bouillerce (W [1–0], 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 K); Kyle Galart (W [1–0], 1.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K).

THE LAST WORD… "This series was an opportunity for us to play pretty much our entire roster. To come away with three wins against a really good program is encouraging. We have depth on our roster, but finding roles and finding the best way to use our depth is the challenge. We have a lot of room to grow as a ball club and we will need to get better as the season progresses to reach our goals. This series was a good start." – CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take a 10 days off before hosting Holy Names University Tuesday, Feb. 15. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
