Ajamian Blast Walks It Off Over Holy Names, 7–5

Jason Ajamian’s first Otter homer caps rally as MB improves to 4–1

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior first baseman Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/St. Francis HS) picked a perfect time to hit his first Otter home run as his no–doubt shot to left center in the bottom of the ninth earned Cal State Monterey Bay a 7–5 win over Holy Names University Tuesday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Ajamian finished with three hits, three RBI and a walk to lead the CSUMB (4–1 overall) offense. Charlie Nasuti (Long Beach/St. John Bosco HS) added three hits and Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) chipped in two more to pace the 11–hit Otter attack.

Junior Kyle Galart (Woodland/Pioneer HS) pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first win of 2022.

The night began on an ominous note for CSUMB as Holy Names parlayed two hit batters, a walk, an error and a single into four unearned runs in the first inning. The Otters answered with one in the home half of the first but mostly were silent through the first half of the game.

Fortunes finally turned in the sixth inning thanks to an Ajamian gem on defense. With runners at the corners an one out, Hawk third baseman Neki Capsilarias laid down a squeeze. Ajamian read the play aggressively and made a perfect toss home to get the force and keep HNU off the board.

The Otter offense responded to the momentum swing in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases on a walk, a hit batter and a Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) single. An RBI groundout by pinch hitter Cooper Smith (Salinas HS/Cabrillo College) set the table for Miguel, who bounced a 2–out single through the right side to tie the game.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jason Ajamian sent his first Otter home run into the night for the walk-off victory.

HOME (RUN) AT LAST… Jason Ajamian's walk-off home run wasn't just his first as an Otter, it was the first by the Otters in five games this season.

HOME SWEET HOME… The Otters improved to 4–0 at home this season with Tuesday's 7–5 win over Holy Names. CSUMB has won seven consecutive home games dating back to the 2020 season.

RIDING THE K–TRAIN… Otter pitchers continue to collect strikeouts as if they were going out of style. Led by reliever Matthew Robustelli's three Ks in 2 1/3 innings, six Otter pitchers combined to strike out 11 Hawks in Tuesday's win. Otter pitchers now have whiffed double–digits in four of five games this season. The lone game in which they didn't fan at least 10 they struck out nine in a 7–inning win over Biola University.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kyle Galart ([W, 1–0], 1.0IP, 0H, 0R, K); Jason Ajamian (3x4, HR [1]], 3 RBI); Brady Miguel (2x5, R, 2 RBI); Charlie Nasuti (3x5, R).

THE LAST WORD… "I'm proud of our team's resolve. After a rough first inning and being down four early, we just kept playing. Our pitching once again gave us a chance to get back into the game. And it's always nice to win a game with a walk off bomb. Ajamian had been pressing a bit before tonight, so it's nice to get him back on the right track as we head into some meaningful games." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters prepare to host a 4–game series against regional contender Azusa Pacific University. The action starts Thursday (Feb. 17) with a 6 p.m. first pitch at the Otter Sports Complex.
