Otters Run Into A Buzzsaw As Azusa Takes Series Opener

Cougar start A.J. Woodall is lights out in a 6–1 APU win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay ran into a buzzsaw by the name of A.J. Woodall Thursday night, as the senior lefty shut down the Otters to lead Azusa Pacific to a 6–1 win Thursday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Woodall gave up a leadoff double to Chase Lindemann (Santa Clarita/Hartnell College) then threw 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball at the Otters. That was enough for the Cougars, who scratched out runs in the first and fifth sixth innings to make him a winner.

CSUMB stayed close thanks to a strong effort from their own senior lefty, Ethan McRae (Hanford/Fresno CC), who allowed just one run on two hits in five innings. But the Cougars took the lead thanks to a 2–out single by Brent Soria in the sixth.

Azusa blew the game open in the seventh on an RBI triple by Omar Lopez and a 3–run homer by Tido Robles.

The Otters finally found a chink in Woodall's armor with a pair of singles in the seventh inning. But University of Oregon transfer Declan Kearney came in to fan five in the final two innings to secure the save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Tido Robles hit a moon shot 3–run homer to cap a 4–run APU eighth inning.

NO MORE Ks… After averaging nearly 11 strikeouts per game through the first five games, Otter pitching fanned just two Azusa Pacific batters Thursday night.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Second baseman Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) collected his first collegiate hi with a 2–out single in the seventh inning Thursday night versus Azusa Pacific.

UNUSUALLY GENEROUS… Otter pitchers traditionally have been stingy, they were unusually generous Thursday night, allowing six earned runs. It was exactly two years and one day since the Otters allowed that many earned runs in a game (9 at Cal State L.A. on Feb. 16, 2020).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Chase Lindemann (1x4, 2B, R); Brady Miguel (2x4); Ethan McRae (ND, 5.0IP, 2H, 1R, 2K).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series against Azusa Pacific with doubleheader Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
