Hartojo’s Heroics Lead To Split With Azusa Pacific

Nico Hartojo hits grand slam to lead MB to 10–4 win in nightcap

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore infielder Nico Hartojo's (Arvada, Colo./MPC) grand slam broke a 3–3 tie in Game 2 and propelled Cal State Monterey Bay to a doubleheader split with Azusa Pacific Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Hartojo's shot to deep center field led the Otters to a 10–4 win in the seven–inning nightcap. APU took the opener 6–4.

Hartojo finished the second game with five RBI, seventh most in a game in Otter history. Junior outfielder Adrian Collazo (Ramona/Palomar College) tied the CSUMB record with four walks.

CSUMB took a 3–1 lead on Jacob Martin's (Bloomington/Chaffey College) bases–clearing double in the third inning. But the Cougars came back to tie with two of their own in the fourth. Hartojo's game–winner came in the fifth inning. CSUMB added insurance with a Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) sac fly, a Hartojo bases–loaded walk and a Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) single in the sixth.

Ryan Platero (San Benito HS/MPC) fanned seven in five innings to earn his first Otter victory. Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) struck out five and allowed no hits in two innings of relief.

CSUMB drew first blood in the opener on Ajamian's 2–run single in the first inning. Azusa scored four unanswered runs over the next four innings to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Ajamian added a solo shot in the seventh inning to pull the Otters to within 4–3, but that's as close as they would get.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… RBI singles by Brent Soria and Tyus Santa Anna extended APU's lead to 6–3 in the seventh inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Nico Hartojo's grand slam broke a 3–3 tie in the fifth inning. APU did not manage a hit over the final two frames.

HE'S WALING, YES INDEED… Adrian Collazo tied the record and became just the third player in Otter history to draw four walks in a game. The last player to do it was Danny Nelson against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Apr. 21, 2012. Andrew Marquardt did it first in a game against Saint Martin's University on Feb. 15, 2008.

IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT… Nico Hartojo's five RBI were the most by an Otter since Brian Morley drove in six in a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Mar. 30, 2019.

BACK ON THE K TRAIN… After striking out a season–low two Cougars Thursday night, Otter pitchers jumped back on the K–Train Friday, fanning 21 in 16 innings. Ryan Platero led the way with seven in five innings.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT (GAME 1)… Jason Ajamian (2x3, HR [2], R, 3 RBI); Sam Nastari (1x4, 2B, R).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT (GAME 2)… Ryan Platero (W [1–0], 5.0IP, 3R, 5H, 7K, 0BB); Nico Hartojo (1x3, HR [1], BB, 5 RBI); Jacob Martin (1x2, 2B, R, 3RBI); Brady Miguel (2x3, 3R)

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series against Azusa Pacific with an 11 a..m. first pitch Saturday.
