Otter Bats Come Alive, But Azusa Claims Wild 18–16 Victory

Lindemann ties Otter hit record, Martin, Smith add pinch-hit home runs

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay bats truly exploded for the first time in 2022 Saturday afternoon, but Azusa Pacific found the extra runs it needed to take a wild 18–16 victory in the series finale at the Otter Sports Complex.

Sophomore outfielder Chase Lindemann (Santa Clarita/Hartnell College) highlighted the day by tying the CSUMB record with five hits. Jacob Martin (Bloomington/Chaffey College) added a pinch–hit 3–run homer and Cooper Smith (Salinas HS/Cabrillo College) hit a pinch–hit grand slam to highlight the 18–hit Otter attack.

Things got frazzled right out of the gate as APU scored six runs in the top of the first inning. But Charlie Nasuti's (Long Beach/Purdue) RBI double kicked off a 4–run first that got the Otters right back into the game.

The Cougars looked like they were taking the game by the throat when they scored six unanswered run to jump ahead 14–8 in the sixth inning. The Otters had an answer once again, however, taking their first lead of the game at 15–14 when Smith's pinch–hit grand slam capped a 7–run Otter sixth.

Designated hitter Casey Dykstra finally put APU on top to stay when he hit solo home runs in the seventh and eighth innings as the Cougars scored four times to go up 18–15. He came on to pitch a roller coaster in the eighth and ninth, allowing a run, two hits and three walks around five strikeouts before holding on to earn his first save of 2022.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… This one wasn't over until Casey Dykstra caught Brady Miguel looking for the final out with Miguel representing the potential winning run.

TALK ABOUT A SLUGFEST… The Otters and Cougars combined for 34 runs in Saturday's 18–16 slugfest. That is one off the Otter record for combined runs in a game of 35, set during an 18–17 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 25, 2007.

HE'S A HIT… Chase Lindemann tied the CSUMB record with five hits Saturday versus Azusa Pacific. He is the sixth Otter to accomplish the feat. The last player to do it was teammate Charlie Nasuti, who had five knocks in a win at Cal State L.A. on Feb. 15, 2020.

JUST MISSING THE TEAM CHARTS… Although 16 runs and 18 hits represent a prodigious effort by the Otter offense, neither mark makes it into the Top 10 in the CSUMB record book.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Chase Lindemann (5x6, 4R CSUMB record 5 hits); Jacob Martin (2x3, HR [1], 2R, 3RBI); Cooper Smith (1x1, GS HR [1], 4RBI); Charlie Nasuti (3x6, 2B, 3R, 3RBI); Brady Miguel (2x7, 2 2B, R); Jason Ajamian (2x5, BB, 2R, 2RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters open CCAA play with a 4–game home series against Cal State East Bay Feb. 25–27. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.
