Otters Open CCAA Play With Battle of the Bays Win

CSUMB scores early, Ethan McRae fans eight in 9–1 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay did a little bit of everything right to earn a 9–1, Battle of the Bays victory over Cal State East Bay Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB improved to 6–4 overall with the win. East Bay dropped to 7–4. It was the CCAA opener for both squads.

Starter Ethan McRae (Hanford/Fresno CC) was solid in his longest outing of the season. He scattered four hits, allowing just one run while striking out a season–high eight. Kyle Galart (Woodland/Cosumnes River College) and Ubaldo Romo (Waterford/Hartnell College) combined for three innings of 2–hit, shutout relief to seal the win.

McRae (1–0) got all the run support he would need in the first inning when Jacob Martin (Bloomington/Chaffey College) hit a rocket to the five/six hole that deflected off the glove of a diving Donovan Bailey and caromed to a vacant spot in shallow left, driving home Charlie Nasuti (Long Beach/Purdue) and Brady Miguel (San Benito HS).

Doubles by Chase Lindemann (Santa Clarita (Hartnell College) and Nasuti helped produce two more runs in the fifth. The Otters then took advantage of some Pioneer generosity to put the game away by scoring four times without a hit in the sixth.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Chris Rubottom scored on a throwing error to cap a 4–run sixth inning, giving the Otters an 8–1 lead.

FOR (CCAA) OPENERS… The Otters improved to 6–10 all–time in CCAA openers dating back to their inaugural season in 2006. Friday' win snapped a 2–game losing streak in CCAA lid-lifters.

A PERFECT 10… Friday's 9–1 victory was CSUMB'S 10th consecutive victory over Cal State East Bay dating back to the 2018 season. The Otters have won 13 of their last 14 against the Pioneers dating back to 2017.

RIDING THE K–TRAIN… With nine strikeouts in Friday's 9–1 win over East Bay, the Otter pitching strikeout rate per game actually went down. CSUMB is now averaging 9.6 strikeouts per game. Otter pitching has fanned nine or more batters in eight of 10 games so far in 2022.

THEY'RE A HIT… Friday's 9–1 win over Cal State East Bay marked the third consecutive game that the Otter offense has generated 10 or more hits.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Ethan McRae (W [1–0], 4H, 1R, 8K, BB); Charlie Nasuti (2x3, 2B, R, 2RBI); Brady Miguel (2x4, 2B, 2R)Jacob Martin (1x3, R, 2RBI); Jason Ajamian (1x4, 2B); Kyle Guerra (1x1, 2B).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series against Cal State East Bay with a Saturday doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
