Otters Rally Three Times to Beat Biola In Home Opener, 5–4

Otter pitchers tie school record with 15 Ks in home–opening victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay rallied three times to overcome Biola University and win its home opener, 5–4, Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Chris Rubottom (Long Beach CC) came up clutch with a 2–out , 2–run single in the bottom of the eight to tie the game at 4–4. Freshman catcher Sergio Solis (Ceres/Central Valley HS) followed with a ball hit sharply past first base to score Rubottom and give the Otters their first lead of the night.

Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) closed the door against the heart of the Biola order, getting a 1–pitch ground out and a pair of strikeouts to earn his first save.

CSUMB got several strong relief performances on the hill Friday night. Ubaldo Romo (Waterford/Hartnell College) fanned three in 1 2/3 innings to help starter Levi Noddin (San Leandro HS/Chabot College) escape an early jam. Freshman Michael Potter (Elk Grove/Sheldon HS) struck out the side in his first collegiate inning.

Sophomore Christian McInerney (Benicia/Sacramento CC) struck out three in 1 1/3 scoreless inning to earn his first win.

Biola strung together four hits to open the scoring with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Otters answered back in the fifth when Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) drew a bases–loaded walk and Jacob Martin (Bloomington/Chaffey College) hit a sac fly.

The Eagles took a 2–run lead again in the seventh when third baseman Oscar Serratos tripled in a pair. As it turned out, that served only to setup up the Otter heroics an inning later.
