Otters Complete Season Sweep Of Humboldt

Total team effort leads to 86–65 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team played perhaps its most complete game of the season to roll to an 86–65 win over visiting Cal Poly Humboldt Thursday night in The Kelp Bed. The win — combined with losses by Cal State San Marcos and Chico State — lifts the Otters (10–5, 9–3 CCAA) into a tie for second place in the CCAA standings.

Senior guard Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore.) scored all of his game–high 20 points in the first half as CSUMB built a 49–28 lead by intermission. The Otters scored on the opening possession of the second half and the lead never dipped below 21 points for the balance of the game.

CSUMB set season highs for points (86), field goal percentage (.526), assists (23) and blocks (9) Thursday night. The Otters also shot a season–best 50 percent (13–for–26) from beyond the arc, with six different Otters connecting from long range.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Kyle Johnson made the first of three consecutive dunks to give the Otters a 66–36 lead with 11:59 remaining.

OTTERS STAY HOT: The Otters continued the best start in their CCAA history (2005–present) by improving to 9–3 in conference play with Thursday's 86–65 win over Cal Poly Humboldt. Prior to this season, CSUMB's best CCAA record through 12 games was 7–5 set twice previously, last during the 2008–09 season.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… With Thursday's 86–61 win over Cal Poly Humboldt, the Otters completed their second consecutive season sweep of the Lumberjacks. CSUMB beat Humboldt 77–74 in overtime on Dec. 4 in Lumberjack Arena.

KNOCK THEIR BLOCK OFF… CSUMB's nine blocks in Thursday's win over Cal Poly Humboldt tie for the No. 2 spot in the Otter record book. They set the school record of 12 against Cal state San Marcos on Jan. 9, 2016.

HELPING HANDS… CSUMB's 23 assists in Thursday's win over Cal Poly Humboldt were the most by an Otter team since they passed 28 dimes in a win over Pacific University on Nov. 11, 2012. It marked the second most assists in a regulation NCAA Division II game behind 24 against Cal State San Bernardino Jan. 13, 2006.

WE LOVE THE 80s: The 80s have been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. With their 86–65 win over Cal Poly Humboldt Thursday night, CSUMB owns a 52–9 (.852) mark in its last 61 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation dating to the 2007–08 season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jordan May 20; REBOUNDS: Everett Perrot 6; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 7; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson 4; STEALS: Dre Ferguson/Levi Frankland/Mike Johnson 1.

THE LAST WORD… "First of all, it was great to have a crowd in The Kelp Bed tonight. They had great energy and our guys fed off that. As far as the game goes, we were really dialed in defensively and on offense it was great to be able to string together a couple good shooting games in a row." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief homestand when Sonoma State visits Saturday as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
