Otters Rally Back To Defeat Tenacious Sonoma State, 80–69

CSUMB overcomes 15–point deficit to improve to 10–3 in the CCAA

SEASIDE, Calif. — After trailing by as many as 15 points, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team came roaring back to earn an 80–69 win over Sonoma State Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

The victory helps CSUMB (11–5, 10–3 CCAA) keep pace in the race for six CCAA tournament bids. The win lifts the Otters into a tie for second place with Cal State San Marcos with six games remaining.

Junior forward Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia) posted his fifth double–double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow Aussie Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland) led four Otters in double figures with a game–high 16 points.

Long–range shooting (6–of–12 from beyond the arc) helped Sonoma build a 41–28 lead by intermission. Five minutes after the restart, the Otters made their move.

A Ferguson layup and 3–pointer began a 17–1 Otter explosion that turned a 49–41 deficit into a 58–50 lead. CSUMB expanded its advantage to as many as 18 points over the ensuing five minutes before settling on the 11–point final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… A pair of Kyle Johnson free throws provided the Otters with their final points and an 80–69 lead with 24 seconds remaining.

OTTERS STAY HOT: The Otters continued the best start in their CCAA history (2005–present) by improving to 10–3 in conference play with Saturday's 80–69 win over Sonoma State. Prior to this season, CSUMB's best CCAA record through 12 games was 7–6 set during the 2008–09 season.

WE LOVE THE 80s: The 80s have been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. With their 80–69 win over Sonoma State, CSUMB now owns a 53–9 (.855) mark in its last 62 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation games dating to the 2007–08 season.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Saturday's 80–69 win over Sonoma State completes a season sweep of the Seawolves by the Otters. It marks the first time they swept the series from Sonoma since the 2007–08 season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Levi Frankland 16; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson 10; ASSISTS: Levi Frankland/Jordan May 3; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson 1; STEALS: Andres Ferguson/Levi Frankland/Jordan May 2.

THE LAST WORD… "The tale of two halves is something we often hear in reference to sports, but it really was the case tonight. Sonoma played with so much energy in the first 20 minutes that we were caught back on our heals and found ourselves in a big hole. It was awesome to see the guys make the adjustment at half and bring the energy and effort required to compete after the break. I'm really proud of the way they stuck together when we were down and supported each other when we got it going back in the right direction." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for the final time in the regular season by starting a 4–game trip with a doubleheader at Chico State Thursday (Feb. 10). The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

GO OTTERS!
