Otters Ride Pitching, Power To 10–2 Win Over East Bay

Bouillerce, Potter star on the hill; Lindemann, Ajamian go yard

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got a strong outing from sophomore Nick Bouillerce (Livermore/MPC), three innings of near perfect relief from freshman Michael Potter (Elk Grove/Sheldon HS) and home runs from Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) and Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) to roll past Cal State East Bay 10–2 Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

The win gives CSUMB (8–5, 3–1 CCAA) a 3–1 series victory over the Pioneers (8–6, 1–3). It's the Otters' fourth consecutive series win over East Bay dating back to 2018.

CSUMB jumped out to an early lead thanks to a first–inning RBI triple from Brady Miguel (San Benito HS), who scored one batter later on a productive out from Charlie Nasuti (Long Beach/Purdue). The Otters doubled their lead in the fourth thanks in large part to a pair of East Bay errors and a 2–out, RBI single from Hunter Harris (Newark/Chabot College).

That proved to be all the support Bouillerce (2–1) would need. He allowed just two runs on six hits before giving way to Potter, who shutdown East Bay one no hits over three scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate save.

CSUMB put the game out of reach in the eighth when a solo shot from Lindemann and a 2–run blast from Ajamian capped the day's scoring.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Michael Potter came on to pitch a perfect seventh with the Otters holding a 5–2 lead. East Bay never got as much as the potential tying run to the on deck circle after that.

A SERIES OF FORTUNATE EVENTS… With Sunday's 10–2 win, CSUMB completed its fourth consecutive series win over the Pioneers. The last time East Bay took a series from the Otters came in 2014, when the Pioneers won 3–of–4.

A NEW STREAK BEGINS… After seeing their 10–game winning streak over East Bay end in Saturday's opening game, the Otters have started a new streak of two games. CSUMB has won 12–of–13 and 15–of–17 from the Pioneers dating back to the 2017 season.

A GOOD BEGINNING… By taking 3–of–4 from East Bay, the Otters won their season–opening series for the first time since taking 2–of–3 from Cal Poly Pomona in 2017. CSUMB split with San Bernardino in 2018, UC San Diego in 2019 and lost 3–1 to Cal State L.A. in 2020.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Nick Bouillerce (W [2–1], 6.0 IP, 6H, 2R, 3K, BB); Michael Potter (Sv [1], 3.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 3K, 2BB); Chase Lindemann (1x4, HR [1], 2R, RBI, BB); Jason Ajamian (1x4, HR [3], 2R, 2RBI, BB); Brady Miguel (2x3, 2B, 3B, 3R, RBI); Nathan Flores (2x4, 2B, 2R, RBI); Hunter Harris (2x4, 2RBI).

THE LAST WORD… "Taking the opening CCAA series is a good way to start conference play. Our pitching and defense were solid all weekend. We seem to be hitting our stride offensively. There is plenty of room for our ball club to improve and our goal is to get a little better each week. We look forward to another challenge next week as we hit the road at Sonoma. They will be a good club and it will take another great effort from us." – CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue CCAA play when they hit the road for a 4–game set at Sonoma State. The action begins Friday (Mar. 4) with a single game at 2 p.m.
