Otters Drop Senior Day Shootout To No. 6 San Bernardino

Otters hold lead into the second half, but Coyotes rally for 109–95 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay had an upset of No. 6 Cal State San Bernardino in its sights for the better part of 25 minutes, but the Coyotes rallied down the stretch to earn a 109–95 win Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

The loss leaves CSUMB (13–7, 12–6 CCAA) as the No. 4 seed in next week's CCAA Championship Tournament. It marks the Otters' highest–ever finish since joining the CCAA for the 2004–05 season.
San Bernardino (22–2, 16–2) clinched the CCAA title and the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

CSUMB got a double–double from junior Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust.), who finished with a season–high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Seniors Jordan May (14 points), Noah Stapes (13) and Mike Johnson (season–high 10) also scored in double figures for the Otters.

That wasn't enough to offset the two–headed Coyote monster of Brandon Knapper and Daytone Jennings. CSUMB held Knapper — the CCAA's leading scorer — scoreless when the teams met in January. Saturday, he scored a career–high 38 points. Jennings added a 26–point, 13–rebound double–double.

The game got away from the Otters on the glass in the second half. CSUMB out–rebounded San Bernardino 23–18 in the first period. In the second however, the Coyotes roared back to earn a 25–12 rebounding edge. That led to a 17–2 San Bernardino advantage in second chance points in the second half, which was, in essence, the game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Darius Mickens made two free throws with 1:18 to go to give San Bernardino a 104–90 lead.

LET THE RECORD SHOW… CSUMB's 13–7 regular season record is its best since joining the NCAA for the 2004–05 season. It's CSUMB second–best record ever, trailing only the 25–7 mark the 1998–99 Otters posted as a member of the NAIA.

IN GOOD STANDINGS… The Otters' 12–6 conference record secured a fourth–place finish in the CCAA standings, the best in CSUMB men's basketball history. CSUMB's previous best finish was fifth, when they went 12–8 over the 2015–16 season.

GET OUT YOUR CALCULATORS… The Otters scored 90–plus points in a home game for the first time since a 96–67 win over Alaska on Nov. 15, 2019. It marked the first time the Otters gave up 90–plus at home since a 93–75 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on  Nov. 23, 2019.

WE LOVE THE 80s (USUALLY)… Saturday's 109–95 loss to Cal State San Bernardino was the rare loss for CSUMB when scoring 80 or more points. The 80s have been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. It's the first time in three seasons that the Otters have scored 80 in regulation and lost. CSUMB now owns a 53–10 (.841) mark in its last 63 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation games dating to the 2007–08 season.

BOMBS AWAY, PART I: With 14 3–pointers Saturday against San Bernardino, CSUMB continues to be prolific from long range, having made multiple 3–point field goals in 191 consecutive games. The last time they didn't make a 3–pointer came seven seasons ago when they went 0–for–9 in a 65–61 loss at Cal State L.A. on Feb. 1, 2014.

BOMBS AWAY, PART II… With 14 3–pointers Saturday against San Bernardino, the Otters have made 10 or more treys in 14 of 21 games this season.

SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, GOODBYE… Saturday's game marked the final collegiate home game for Otter seniors Andre Ferguson, Mike Johnson, Jordan May and Noah Stapes.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Andrew Ferguson 22; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson 10; ASSISTS: Tommy Kramer 4; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson/Kyle Johnson 1; STEALS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the CCAA Championship Tournament where they will meet No. 5 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday (Mar. 3) at Lumberjack Arena on the campus of Humboldt State. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
