Utsunomiya Earns First Top 10 Finish At Bay Area Invite

Sophomore Hayata Utsunomiya places eighth in 83–golfer field

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Sophomore Hayata Utsunomiya (Osaka, Japan) earned his first collegiate Top 10 finish by placing eighth at the Bay Area Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Club at Ruby Hill.

Utsunomiya went 73–71–74 for a 2–over, 218 to earn a share of eighth place. His previous best collegiate finish was 18th at the 2020 Bay Area Invitational on the same Club at Ruby Hills course.

All four Otter scoring rounds finished between 73 and 75 Tuesday. Freshman Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden) carded CSUMB's low round of the day with a 73. Freshman Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) matched Utsunomiya's 74 while freshman Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) shot 75.

Promising freshman Liam Allder (Sundsvall, Sweden) withdrew due to injury before completing the front nine Tuesday.

CSUMB finished with a team score of 296 for the day and 891 for the tournament, giving the Otters sole possession of sixth place in the 13–team field.

Cal State San Marcos shot at even–par 864 to win the team title. Cougar sophomore Matt Pennington took individual medalist honors at 8–under 208.

CSUMB will take next weekend off before returning to action Mar. 7 at the Poppy ridge Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Club in Livermore.
