Otters Bounce Back With 77–67 Battle of the Bay Win

Jordan May scores all of his team–high 16 points in the second half

HAYWARD, Calif. — Following a disappointing effort Thursday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team bounced back into the win column with a 77–67 win over Cal State East Bay Saturday afternoon in Pioneer Gym.

The win guarantees the CSUMB (13–5, 12–4 CCAA) will finish the season with its best winning percentage since moving to the NCAA ranks for the 2004–05 season. It also gives the Otters a share of third place in the CCAA race with two games remaining in the regular season.

The Otters got solid efforts from their top three players, led by senior guard Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore./Reynolds HS), who scored all of his team–leading 16 points in the second half. CSUMB also got 15 points and a season–high seven rebounds from junior Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Aust.) and a 10–point, 6–rebound, 3–block game from junior Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust.).

The game was close through much of the first half until a Tommy Kramer (Amador Valley HS) 3–point broke a 23–23 tie with 5:05 remaining. The Otters claimed their first double–digit lead, 47–36, on a May 3–ball three minutes after the restart. CSUMB's lead hovered between eight and 15 points for the balance of the game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jordan May made a pair of free throws to extend CSUMB's lead to 74–62 with 1:02 to play.

PLAYING THE PERCENTAGE… Saturday's win guarantees that the Otters will finish with a winning percentage of at least .591 (assuming all possible games are played). That would break the school record of .533 (16–14) set during CSUMB's run to the CCAA Championship Game in the 2008–09 season. It would be the second high winning percentage in school history, trailing only the 1998–99 Otters, who went 26–7 (.788) and captured the NAIA Division II West Region title.

KNOCK THE BLOCK… Led by three rejections from Andrew Ferguson, the Otters blocked six shots Saturday at Cal State East Bay. That total trails only the nine they had in a win over Cal Poly Humboldt on Feb. 3 for the most in a game this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jordan May 16; REBOUNDS: Kyle Johnson, 8; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 3; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson 3; STEALS: Jordan May/Noah Stapes 1.

THE LAST WORD… ""The guys did a great job bouncing back from a rough performance at Dominguez Hills. All day Friday, and again today, the team was really focused on sticking together and having a better performance against a streaking East Bay team. This group has a lot of good qualities. Maybe my favorite is their ability to keep the past in the past and focus on the present." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to The Kelp Bed to close the regular season with a pair of home contests. The action begins Thursday (Feb. 24) with a visit from CCAA Tournament hopeful Cal Poly Pomona for a doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

GO OTTERS!
