Small Ball Does In Otters In 2022 Opener

Holy Names manufactures game’s only runs to win, 2–0

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Host Holy Names University played small ball to manufacture a pair of seventh–inning runs and spoil Cal State Monterey Bay's first game since Mar. 8, 2020 by taking a 2–0 decision Tuesday night at the College of Alameda.

The Hawks played the littlest of small bal to score the game's only runs, parlaying two infield singles, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a passed ball into a pair of scores. The Otters put the tying runs on base in the eighth inning and got a 1–out single from Jason Ajamian (Pasadena/CSUN) in the ninth, but couldn't break the HNU shutout.

CSUMB got strong outings from a half dozen pitchers as Head Coach Walt White tried to get as many arms into the game as he could. Senior lefty Ethan McRae (Hanford/Fresno CC) got the nod and fanned four in three no-hit inning to open the game. The Otters also got scoreless innings from Kyle Galart (Woodland/Cosumnes River College), Nick Bouillerce (Livermore/MPC), Christian McInerney (Benicia/Sacrmaneto CC) and Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/UoP).

Junior Colby Harrison (Chico/Sacramento CC) gave up the two infield singles in the seventh and took the hard-luck loss. Nevertheless, Otter pitchers allowed just four hits and struck out 11 in eight innings of work.

CSUMB returns to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex for its 2022 home opener Friday when West Region contender Biola University visits to open a 3–game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
