Sophomore striker Amelia McManus earns first team recognition

November 03, 2022

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore forward Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) earned first team All–California Collegiate Athletic Association honors to headline a record seven Otters on the All–CCAA team announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.

McManus finished third in the CCAA with 22 points, the most ever scored by an Otter at the NCAA Division II level. Her six assists were the third most in the league and tied the school record for assists in a season (Jessica Martelle in 2003).

She also finished third on the CCAA regular season goal scoring list with eight, the second–most ever scored by an Otter at the NCAA Division II level.

Joining McManus as second team All–CCAA selections were senior Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS), who earned her third All–CCAA award and junior Mitsy Ramirez (Richmond/Making Waves Academy) who earned her second. Safarians finished third on the team with three goals and 10 points. Ramirez added three assists while anchoring the defensive midfield.
The Otters also placed a quartet of seniors on the honorable mention team. Defender Maya Richardson Sacramento/West Campus HS) received her second nod on the honorable mention team. Goalkeeper Maleni Morales (Fremont/Mission San Jose HS) posted the second most shutouts (7) in program history, defender Linda Nigg (Oklahoma City/Deer Creek HS) was a key part of that effort. Nayeli Sandoval Gallo (Bloomington HS/San Bernardino Valley College) capped her collegiate career by recording the third hat trick in Otter history during CSUMB's 8–0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the 2022 season finale.

"Congrats to all of our athletes who received All–CCAA recognition this year," says CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart. "It is an honor to receive accolades in such a competitive conference. It shows the momentum and quality of the program and we plan on continuing this upward trajectory.  The future is bright for CSUMB women's soccer and I am grateful to all of these players who led the way."

CSUMB finished the season 7–6–5 overall and 4–4–3 in the CCAA, missing a postseason bid by just two points. The Otters posted their second consecutive winning record (they were 7–5–5 in 2021), marking the first time in program history they posted back-to-back winning records.
