Otters Play Giant Killers Again, Topple No. 6 Cal State San Marcos

Otters beat a Top 10 team for the second time in seven days

January 29, 2022

BOX SCORE SAN MARCOS, Calif. — After never having defeated a Top 10 team in its 26–year history, the Cal State Monterey Bay men, slayed a giant for the second time in seven days by upsetting No. 6 Cal State San Marcos, 71–69, Saturday afternoon at the CSUSM Sports Center.

CSUMB, which defeated then No. 7 Chico State in The Kelp Bed last week, led wire–to–wire in this one, though it had to withstand a furious late charge by the Cougars to earn the win. The Otters raced to a 15–4 lead in the first four minutes forcing San Marcos to play catch–up for the rest of the afternoon.

The Otters still lead by 10 with 1:28 remaining when San Marcos went on a 12–3 run to pull to within one at 70–69. But the Otters got a free throw from Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia) with 1.2 seconds remaining and a length of the court heave by San Marcos didn't come close as the final horn sounded.

Ferguson led the Otter offense with 18 points and a career–high six assists. Senior guard Dre Ferguson (Los Angeles/Pacific Hills HS) added a season–high 15 points, including a career–best three 3–pointers.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… the final horn sounded. San Marcos had a last —albeit desperation — attempt from its own key in the final second.

GIANT KILLERS… Prior to Saturday's 71–69 win at No. 6 San Marcos (and the 64–61 win over No. 7 Chico State on Jan.22) the Otters hadn't defeated a nationally–ranked program since a 67–65 win over (then) No. 14 ranked Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 11, 2016. They'll likely get one more opportunity when current No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino visits to close the regular season on Feb. 26.

BOMBS AWAY… The Otters made 13–of–30 from from beyond the arc in Saturday's win at No. 6 Cal State San Marcos, marking the eighth time in 14 games this season they made double–digit 3–pointers. The prolific shooting comes as little surprise in the Isaac Williams era of Otter basketball. It marked the 43rd time in 95 games under Williams that the Otters have made 10 or more 3–pointers in a game.

BOMBS AWAY, PART II… With 13 treys added Saturday, the Otters have made 127 3–pointers through just 14 games this season. That mark already ranks No. 19 on the CSUMB single–season list. The Otters set the school record with 256 long balls last season. In fact, three of the top four 3–point shooting seasons in Otter history have come with Isaac Williams on the bench.

THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE ROAD… Saturday's 71–69 win at Cal State San Marcos lifted CSUMB's road record to 4–2. The Otters now have a better winning percentage on the road (.667) than they do at home (.625).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Andrew Ferguson 18; REBOUNDS: Kyle Johnson 9; ASSISTS: Andrew Ferguson 6; BLOCKS: Jordan May 1; STEALS: Four Otters 1.

THE LAST WORD… "This was a great team win against a really high level San Marcos team. I'm really proud of the guys' effort in the game but far more impressed by their ability to stay in the moment and not take the baggage of the previous game into the next. Good or bad, they play for today." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host Humboldt State Thursday (Feb. 3). The men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. as the second half of doubleheader action.
