WBB NOTEBOOK at CAL STATE L.A.
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team makes the first of two Southern California trips over the final month of the season when it heads down Hwy 101 to face Cal State L.A. Thursday (Jan. 27) in the CSULA University Gym.
In their last outing, the Otters built a 24–22 lead at the half, but the advantage was built on a mirage as visiting Chico State rallied for a 63–49 win Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed. Chico started the game 0–for–15 from long range. Then the Wildcats came out from the break to make four consecutive threes as part of a 16–2 run that put them in control. Lauryn Pointer came off the bench to score 14 points for CSUMB. Sarah Shaw added a game–high 11 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles have lost 4–of–5 heading into this week's game against CSUMB. They split on the road last weekend, winning at San Bernardino (76–65) and losing at Pomona (69–76). Shockingly, L.A. has struggled at home this season, going 1–6 in University Gym. Guards Lily Buggs (Fr.) and Nicole Flennaugh (So.) lead a top–heavy CSULA scoring ledger at 17.1 and 16.7 ppg respectively. Buggs ranks No. 2 in the CCAA in scoring and No. 3 (9.2 rpg) on the glass.
Cal State L.A. made a school–record 15 3–pointers to play Grinch in Cal State Monterey Bay's final game before Christmas, upending the Otters 76–60 Dec. 11 in The Kelp Bed. The Golden Eagles began the day shooting 29 percent from beyond the arc but went 15–for–30 in this game. Nicole Flennaugh led the way with nine treys and 34 points. Frances Potts and Lauryn Pointer scored 15 apiece to lead the Otters.
