Frankland Explodes For 31 As Otters Ground Golden Eagles

Junior Levi Frankland’s career–high game leads Otters to an 83–73 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Junior guard Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Aust.) exploded for 22 of his career–high 31 points in the second half to help Cal State Monterey Bay rally past visiting Cal State L.A., 83–73, Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

With the win, CSUMB improves to 4–3 overall and 3–1 in the CCAA. It marks the third time in program history that the Otters have opened CCAA play with wins in three of their first four games.

The Golden Eagles built their biggest lead of the game at 48–39 one minute into the second half. It took the Otters less than four minutes to erase that advantage. L.A. responded by building its final lead, 64–59, midway through the period before the Otter gained the upper hand for good.

A Frankland layup off a beautiful Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust.) assist started a 7–0 run that put the Otters ahead to stay. CSUMB kept its lead in the in the 5-to-7 point range until a pair of Ferguson free throws and a late Frankland jumper made the final margin 10 points.

In addition to Frankland, Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore./Point Loma Nazarene) scored 14 points while Ferguson pulled down a game–high nine rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Tommy Kramer grabbed a ball off the defensive glass to give the Otters possession with 30 seconds remaining.

THE AUSSIE OTTER THE 30–POINT CLUB… With his career–high 31 points in Saturday's win over Cal State L.A., Levi Frankland joins Andrew Ferguson as current Otters who have scored 30 or more points in a game. Ferguson did it with 34 in a win over Sonoma State on Jan. 16, 2020.

HONORARY 30–POINT CLUB MEMBER… It should be noted that Jordan May scored his career high of 41 points against Corban University while a sophomore at East Oregon on Dec. 16, 2018.

HOT START… CSUMB is 3–1 in CCAA play for the third time in conference history. The 2008–09 Otters started 3–1 en route to an 8–12 finish and their first CCAA Tournament bid. The 2004–05 Otters — CSUMB's first year in the CCAA — began 4–1 and finished 10–10.

ON THE REBOUND… After being out–rebounded (41–40) for the first time all season Thursday against Cal State San Marcos, the Otters bounced back Saturday by out–rebounding Cal State L.A. 46–38. CSUMB ranks No. 2 in the CCAA with a +6.3 rebounding margin.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK… A big part of Saturday's win over Cal State L.A. was the ability to take care of the ball. CSUMB committed a season–low seven turnovers. It's the lowest turnover total by they Otters since the committed six in a win over Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 2, 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Levi Frankland 31; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson 9; ASSISTS: Tommy Kramer 4; BLOCKS: Jordan Archie/Noah Stapes 1; STEALS: Jordan May/Noah Stapes 2.

THE LAST WORD… "The first half of tonight's game lacked energy and togetherness on our part, but I'm really proud of the way the guys rallied together in the second half.  They played with purpose and supported each other on the floor and from the bench. Now we just need to build on that energy moving forward." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play their final game before the winter break when they travel to The City to take on San Francisco State Monday (Dec. 20). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Note that this game is NOT part of a men's/women's doubleheader.
