Otters Give Themselves Early Christmas Gift, Beat Gators

Jordan May (26 pts) leads four in double figures as Otters win 76–64

SAN FRANCISCO — Senior guard Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore./Reynolds HS) scored a season–high 26 points as visiting Cal State Monterey Bay earned a pre-Christmas 76–64 win over San Francisco State Monday night in The Swamp.

The victory lifts CSUMB (5–3 overall) to 4–1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play for just the second time since joining the conference for the 2004–05 season. In fact, that inaugural CCAA campaign was the last time the Otters began conference play on such a high note.

This one didn't come easy, however, as a cold–shooting start allowed the Gators to maintain small leads for much of the opening 30 minutes. In fact, SFSU had earned its biggest lead, 52–46 midway through the second half when the Otters finally found traction.

A J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) 3–pointer and a driving layup by Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Aust.) got the Otters rolling on what turned out to be a 30–12 run over the final 11:08 that turned the 6–point deficit into the double–digit win. When the dust had settled, five different Otters had scored in the onslaught.

In addition to May, Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust.) recorded his third double–double of the season, finishing with 10 points and a game–high 11 rebounds. Frankland added 12 points and freshman Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) reached double figures for the fifth time in eight collegiate games with 10.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Andrew Ferguson rebounded a Jalen Chandler miss with 49 seconds remaining and the Otters leading 74–64.

HOT START… CSUMB is 4–1 in CCAA play for the second time in conference history. The 2004–05 Otters — CSUMB's first year in the CCAA — began 4–1 and finished 10–10, although, as a provisional NCAA member, the 2004–05 Otters were not eligible for postseason play.

"MAY" THE FORCE BE WITH YOU… Senior guard Jordan May picked a great night to score his season high of 26 points in Monday's win at San Francisco State. It's his second 20–point game in eight Otter appearances. He scored 20 against Saint Martin's on Nov. 27.

IT "MAY" NOT BE A CAREER HIGH THOUGH… Although 26 points is his Otter high, it's not his career best. May scored 41 points against Corbin University while a sophomore at Eastern Oregon on Dec. 16, 2018. In fact, May now has scored 20 or more points 25 times in 90 collegiate appearances (including18 at Eastern Oregon and 5 at Point Loma Nazarene).

A TALE OF TWO STREAKS… Monday's 76–64 win at San Francisco State can be neatly summarized in two streaks. The first streak saw the Otters go 16–for–46 (.348) from the floor and 5–of–23 (.217) from 3–point range over the first 29 minutes. The second streak saw them finish the game 9–of–14 (.643) from the field and 6–of–8 (.750) from beyond the arc.

FERGUSON IS DOUBLE–DOUBLE TROUBLE AGAIN… For the third time in the last six games, Andrew Ferguson recorded a double–double when he finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds in Monday's win at San Francisco State. He now has six double–doubles in 15 Otter appearances.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jordan May 26; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson 11; ASSISTS: Tommy Kramer 5; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson/Kyle Johnson/Jordan May/Noah Stapes 1; STEALS: Jordan May 3.

THE LAST WORD… "Tonight was all about teamwork; not necessarily in the way we typically define it, but because the group really supported one another through the ups and downs of the game. We had some pretty rough stretches of execution and shooting, but all you could here on the court and from our bench was positive talk and constructive criticism. As I've been saying all along this is an amazing group of young men and I'm excited to see where it all goes." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take time off over the Christmas holiday before returning to action with a nonconference game against Pac West Conference foe Fresno Pacific Thursday, Dec. 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in The Kelp Bed.
