MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Cal State Monterey Bay cross country teams finished their 2021 seasons in historic fashion, led the by the Otter women who earned their best team finish ever by placing 13th on the Ash Creek Preserve course.

"I have proud been of my teams this season. Today only leveled up that sentiment," says CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "The men and women pushed through some of the worst weather I've witnessed at an NCAA Regional meet."

Rain, wind and hail hit the Monmouth area, depressing times across the board. For the women, even though it wasn't a day of individual record–shattering times, a solid team effort did the job.

Freshman Natalie Harper (Elk Grove/Cosumnes River HS) led the way by placing 54th overall in 22:50.3. Junior Brooke Roy (Camas [Wash.] HS) and freshman Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) followed closely in 23:08.6 and 23:10.4 to place 72nd and 74th respectively.

Mackenzie Caprino (24:14.1, 116th), Sierra Shaver (24:27.4, 122nd) and Kim Tovar (24:56.0, 133rd) closed the scoreline for the Otter women.

In the men's race, the Otters suffered a body blow early when top runner Nathan Garcia (El Centro/Southwest HS) was forced to drop out less than halfway through the 10K race.

Without their leader, Connor Farrow (Modesto/Berey HS) and freshman Jaime Gonzalez (Camarillo HS) were the top CSUMB finishers, placing 97th and 98th respectively. Both runners were credited with a time of 33:24.7. That was a 10K PR for both as well as a personal course record for Farrow.

Sophomore Ryan Bradley (Sacramento/Sheldon HS) took more than a minute off his 10K PR by finishing in 34:34.4 to place 120th overall. Freshman Maxwell Eickle (34:37.4) and Diego Denson (34:50.2) finished in 124th and 125th place respectively while competing in their first collegiate 10K races.

"The men found major PRs in spite of the not so nice morning. They will grow into a force in our conference and region," said Rhines. "The women once again stepped up at the right time. They ran a smart race while keeping only a small gap between each other. They too will have an incredible future within the CCAA and West Region."

The NCAA West Regional concludes the 2021 race season for both the CSUMB men's and women's cross country programs.
