SEASIDE, Calif. — Led by a team tournament low round of 69 by freshman Kyle Kuest (Clovis West HS), the Cal State Monterey Bay men's golf team held firm to finish third at the Otter Invitational Tuesday afternoon on Bayonet Golf course.

36–hole leader Cal State San Bernardino held on for a 1–stroke victory over the University of Colorado–Colorado Springs, 889–890. CSUMB finished four strokes off the pace. CCAA rivals Chico State and Stanislaus State completed the top five.

While his 69 Tuesday vaulted Kuest up 24 spots to an 11th place finish, fellow freshman Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden) was CSUMB's top finisher, placing seventh at 4–over 220 thanks to an eagle on the par–5 No. 1, his final hole of the round. Freshman Ryan Parry (Sacramento/Jesuit HS) also placed in the Top 15 as his 225 was good for a share of 13th place.

Freshman Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) matched Kuest's 69 Tuesday and was the fourth Otter freshman to finish in the Top 25 as his 227 was good for 23rd place.

Cal State San Marcos sophomore Matthew Pennington was one of three players to shoot a tournament low round of 67 Tuesday to earn individual medalist honors with a 54–hole score of 3–under 213. He was the only golfer in the 91–player filed to finish in the red.

"Overall this was a great tournament for us this week. I feel that everyone is learning and now it is important for us to put in the work before the spring season," says CSUMB Head Coach Jason Owen.

The Otter Invitational closes the fall portion of the CSUMB men's golf schedule. The Otters will return to action Feb. 14–15 with a trip south to  the CSUSM Fujikara Invitational at Shadow Ridge Golf Club in Vista, Calif.
