Vartazarian’s Game–High 18 Not Enough As Chico Pulls Away

Sylvia Vartazarian moves up to No. 4 on CCAA scoring chart but Wildcats win, 79–52

SEASIDE, Calif. — Junior forward Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College) scored a game–high 18 points, but it wasn't enough to stop visiting Chico State from taking a 79–52 decision Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Fellow forward Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) added 11 points to the Otter cause. But aside from those two, the rest of the Otters shot just .218 (7–for–32) from the floor, and that simply wasn't good enough against a team the caliber of Chico State.

CSUMB stayed close early and trailed just 20–16 at the end of one quarter. The Wildcats gradually eased away throughout the second period, eventually taking a 10–point lead into the lockerroom.

The Chico lead grew to 17 points a minute in the second half and the Otters never got closer than 15 over the final 18 minutes.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Maddy Wong 3–pointer made it 71–46 Chico with 5:38 to play.

VARTAZARIAN MOVES UP TO No. 4… With her 18–point performance Saturday versus Chico State, Sylvia Vartazarian moved up to No. 4 on the CCAA scoring leaders chart. She currently averages 13.7 points per game. If the season ended today, that would rank No. 4 on the Otter all–time, single–season scoring list as well.

PARKER UP TO No. 24 IN STEALS… With two more thefts Saturday versus Chico, Camille Parker moved up to No. 24 on the Otter single–season steals list with 38. She moved past Stephanie Sack (37 in 2016). Next up is Jessica Fontenette, who had 39 steals as a sophomore in 2011.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sylvia Vartazarian 18; REBOUNDS: Sylvia Vartazarian 8; ASSISTS: Katie Fitzgerald 3; BLOCKS: Lizzy Benton 3; STEALS: Camille Parker 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to SoCal to play a pair of games, starting with a doubleheader Thursday (Feb. 6) at Cal State Dominguez Hills The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
