Otters Come Up Clutch For 68–61 Win At Cal State L.A.

Chyna Dews scores 15, Sylvia Vartazarian pulls down 15 boards

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay took an early lead then made several clutch free throws down the stretch to hold off Cal State L.A., 68–61, Thursday at CSULA.

CSUMB got a season–high 15 points from sophomore Chyna Dews (Venice HS), 14 points from freshman Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) and a team season–high 15 rebounds from junior Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College). Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) added her fourth double–figure rebounding game with 10 boards while Serena Toney (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) chipped in 10 points off the bench.

The Otters led by three after the first quarter and by four, 28–24 at the half. They gained separation by scoring 25 points in the third — their biggest third quarter of the season — then held off a late L.A. rally by making seven consecutive free throws in the final 38 seconds to seal the win.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Chyna Dews made a clutch free throw to extend the Otter lead to 68–61 with 12 seconds to play.

CHAIRWOMAN OF THE BOARDS… Sylvia Vartazarian pulled down a career and team season–high 15 rebounds in Thursday's win at Cal State L.A. She surpassed her previous high of 11 and Camille Parker's team best 14 (both vs. San Francisco State on Jan. 18). She becomes the ninth player in CSUMB history to pull down 15 rebounds in a game and the first since Parker grabbed 17 against San Francisco State on Feb. 16, 2019.

CHAIRWOMEN OF THE BOARDS… Led by Vartazarian and Parker, the Otters matched their season high with 47 team rebounds in Thursday's win at Cal State L.A. They also pulled down 47 boards in their win over San Francisco State on Jan. 18.

WHAT A STEAL… Led by five steals from Katie Fitzgerald and another four from Chyna Dews, the Otters picked 12 Cal State L.A. pockets in Thursday night's win. It marked their most steals of the season and their most since they had 13 in a win over San Francisco State on Feb. 16, 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Chyna Dews 15; REBOUNDS: Sylvia Vartazarian 15; ASSISTS: Camille Parker 4; BLOCKS: Sylvia Vartazarian 2; STEALS: Katie Fitzgerald 5.

THE LAST WORD… "It was nice to see our firecracker Chyna Dews show out tonight! The ladies played inspired and got back to playing MB basketball. I am very proud of the total team effort. We'll be excited tonight and then start preparing for Saturday." – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their quick trip to the greater Los Angeles area with a visit to Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday (Feb. 8). The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
